Halloween is a favorite holiday for many children-with the combination of dressing up, staying up late, and collecting candy, it is easy to see why. It can be even more exciting if the whole family gets involved in dressing up for parties, trick-or-treating, or other events of the season. One way to create a memorable experience that your children will never forget is to choose coordinating costumes for siblings. If you’re young at heart, you can join in the fun, and decide on a costume theme that involves the whole family!

There are many common themes that you can use to get the whole family in on Halloween fun. For example, you could let your children dress up as bottles of catsup and mustard, salt and pepper shakers, or playing cards (a family dressed as a “full house” would make a unique Halloween costume theme). Whole families of super heroes complete with a “super dog” or “super baby” make a great splash on Halloween night as well. A pirate family costume can be pulled together with little trouble-even if mom or dad simply dons a big hat and an eye patch to match the little buccaneers.

Another fun family costume is a “farmer and farm animals” motif. Young children love to dress up as animals, and you can easily buy or make farm animal costumes for your children. Pigs, cows, ducks, and sheep are all great choices for this theme. For your part, you can grab a straw hat and a pair of overalls, and dress up as a farmer (or a farmer’s wife) to complete the look. Of course, you can create a memorable costume set by turning the tables, and letting your children be the flannel-clad farmers.

Cues taken from pop culture can produce some interesting costume themes as well. A family of tweens or teens could dress up as American Idol judges or contestants, Survivor competitors, or the cast of a favorite movie or television show. A quick look at popular television shows, musical acts, and other current forms of entertainment can give you a wealth of ideas for your next Halloween get-together. Don’t be surprised if older kids take a pass on sharing a costume theme with mom and dad, even if they enjoy choosing “sibling” costumes together.

Great costume ideas for siblings include the “Toy Story” gang, featuring Buzz and Woody, Jack and Jill of nursery rhyme fame (don’t forget the pail of water), or Raggedy Ann and Andy. If you prefer a more traditional approach, timeless themes such as vampires, mummies, witches and warlocks, and ghosts can provide great family fun for your children’s Halloween activities. These themes are easy to coordinate, and in most cases, you can make the costumes rather than buying them. Making your own costumes can lend an even greater element of creativity to your motif. Be sure that the littlest members of the family are in on the joke, and slant the costumes towards being funny, not scary.

The possibilities for family or sibling costumes are nearly endless. Take some time to brainstorm with your family to find common interests, and choose a family theme that everyone will enjoy-and don’t forget to take pictures on the big night!
