Old School Deaths

May 3, 2008

We have finally come to a point in time when the old finally have to die. No, I am not talking about people this time. Of course it is mostly old people that are hanging on to the ideas and products that need to die. This is my personal list of Old School Deaths
5) Print Newspapers and Magazines. The average newspaper reader in America is 55 and keeps going up every year, making this a dying industry. We should help it along to save on the environmental costs associated with it.

4) Cheap disposable appliances. This is more of killing off old school cheap Asian imports and replacing it with even older school products. We need to go back to making appliances that either last a long time or can be repaired inexpensively compared to the price of new one. I heard not so long back on a radio show that on an average year we buy roughly 4 million toasters a year, which means probably 3.9 million toasters end up in the landfills a year. Now add coffee makers, electric skillets, microwaves, video players, phones, TV’s etc and we are adding a scary amount of bulk to the landfills and taking an even scarier bulk from our checking accounts.
3) Racism isn’t something that is strictly the domain fo old people. On the other hand the older you are, especially for whites, the more likely you are to be a racist.
2) The RIAA. Too few companies are controlling way too much of the music industry. It is a wonder that they have not been hit antitrust and RICO charges yet, of course seeing as how the Bush machine is still in play maybe not.
1) The MPAA. For the same reason the RIAA should die a quick death, so follows the MPAA. Without the approval of less than a hundred people all paid indirectly by the major studios and include members of the clergy, members of the studios themselves, their families, and some people who you just ask how the fuck do they qualify as average Americans your movie is not allowed into 99.99% of US theaters.
This is a bought and paid for group who has complete authority over what we are allowed as adults to see. They go as far as counting the number of times fuck is said, to many and they either make you cut or giver you an NC17 rating which means no one will show your movie. Forget about actually showing fucking either. They are okay with absolutely disturbing violence, but the idea that women can have orgasms too is too much for them.
With that in mind I will leave you with the words of George Carlin.
“…people much wiser than I have said, I’d rather have my son watch a film with two people making love than two people trying to kill one other. And I of course agree. I wish I know who said it first, and I agree with that. But I would like to take it a step further. I would like to substitute the word fuck, for the word kill in all those movie cliches we grew up with. ‘Okay Sheriff, we’re gonna fuck ya now. But we’re gonna fuck ya slow’…”

I like newspapers…I know it’s silly, what with news on TV and the internet, but it seems more personal that way.

    Does that make sense?
