The best way to gain followers is to be a good one yourself. Follow a few dozen new random people a day and engage in conversations and start them yourself. I suggest using tweetdeck for this. At the end of the week you will have started building your inner circle of friends.

If you don't already use I highly recommend tweetdeck you can sort out all the people you follow, your replies and direct messages. You are right, there is some people who are interesting to follow even if they don't follow in return and some I wouldn't expect a follow from like news agencies, though for some reason cnn financial follows me. There are other people who you follow and don't followback who are valuable to follow like Scoble, or Darren Rowse. As often as not replying to or rt their messages can get you some more interesting followers.

In the end you probably don't have to worry about who is and isn't following you back until you reach the following 2000 mark.

It's a mess. I follow about 1000 people and haven't tried to clean it up yet. But I am a follower and followee, so I don't mind if some of the people that follow me don't return the favor. I usually check out the tweets first. But there was a time back there that I signed up for one service or another that automatically followed people without my knowledge, so there is still a mess.

I've never really used twitter directories to attract followers and that might be why I took so long getting started with twitter. When i was first getting started I randomly followed people and then some people they were following, usually the ones with hot women icons. I still do this on occasion to attract new followers. For every 4 people I follow within a week I usually net 5 new followers for every two people who follow me back. Some of my best twitter friends are coming from from those secondary followers.

This method does cause a bit of problems if you don't keep up on unfollowing unproductive people. I just ran into a new tool last night Friend or Follow that lets you check which of the people you follow aren't following you back. I was amazed at how many people I have in my list that weren't following me, nearly 20% Some were easy to understand like the news organizations etc, but later on I am going to make a serious attempt to weed out some of them.

I think the Twitter directories do help a bit. I notice a surge of new followers after each submission. When I was new to Twitter I used directories like that to find people to follow. Now I don't do too much looking. I mainly follow people who have followed me, if they have valuable tweets.
