Stop Poverty Forever - Yeah Right!

This sounds like a great plan until you realize just how impossible it is and how naive it is even to say.  The fact is there will always be poor people, middle class and rich people.  The world economy needs them to survive.  Does this mean we should have starving kids on the streets in third world countries?  Yes it does.  I know that sounds horrible, and for them it probably is.  However without poor people in third world countries there are not middle class people in the industrialized world.  Without a middle class there are only slaves and tyrants, without any hope of ever being more than where you are.

Should we of the industrialized countries be helping the poor or the world?  Yes, to a degree.  There is really only so much we can do for them though unless all of us are willing to make drastic changes in the way we live our own lives.  We can pick out a group or an individual and give them everything they could hope for, but unless they decide to change their own lives in their own countries, nothing really changes.  We could open our borders and help everyone who wants to come come, but we are only helping ourself and setting the stage for change in those countries. However until those people decide to change for themselves, nothing we do will help them.

Yeah stopping poverty sounds great, but remember when you raise everyone to the same level all you really achieve is mediocrity.

There is so much irony in what you’re saying, but it may be sadly true. I often think of colonialism and what it has brought to the modern era. We live in the industrialized rich West and enjoy the comforts we do, because the rest of the world is pretty poor. It’s y we have so much illegal immigration! We use these people and their cheap labor, and of course they’re gonna come because they’re starving at home!

One big giant simple yet complex cycle. I could go on and on and on…

You are right that it is cyclical. The problem is we just don’t know how long the cycle will take. Barring some major global catastrophe between 50 and 150 years from now we will have people leaving the US to go looking for jobs elsewhere in the world.

Got something to say?
