Just when I thought there was a real chance at change for my gay friends, we hit yet another roadside queer bomb. Danny Noriega, who I suspected from his first prissy attitude blowup has videos of him announcing it to the world on YouTube, even though it has seemed to disappear before I could confirm it personally. David Hernandez did the full monty at gay bars, even though he hasn’t come out as far as I know. Do they have the right to be gay and do what ever their conscience dictates? Sure they do. However there are issues bigger than either of them. If the gay community wants changes, it needs to go out of its way to put a different face out there. They need to present themselves to the majority straight community as normals, or they will never be taken seriously. It is sad it has to come down that way, but that is the reality of the situation.

What is worse with the gay vote being so publicly aligned with the Democrats, for lack of a better phrase, they could queer the whole deal come November if they don’t do something about this situation and do it soon. My Complete thoughts are over on The Other Blog.

Brad, I completely agree with you on this. I’m a lesbian and I think people have a right to act however they want. However, it would be nice if gays in the spotlight would consider their social responsibilities. Too often it seems that those ignorant folks who hate gays lump the group together. So every time a Danny Noriega flames his way across straight America’s television sets, he erases all those good mainstream vibes created by Ellen and all the other “normal” gays out there.

I firmly believe that if homosexuals want to be treated equally to straight people, then as a group we need to present ourselves as part of mainstream society. And I don’t mean that all lesbians should grow their hair out and wear flowery dresses every day or that every gay man needs to smear grease on his face and carry tools around the highlight his masculinity. I’m all for personal expression. However, in the eyes of the majority of Americans, Danny Noriega is not just representing himself. He is a Gay Man representing a community of Gay Men. Perpetuating a stereotype of feminized, flouncy poofters is very irresponsible of him.

Okay. I’m off my soapbox now. =)

By the way, I just found your blogs and I’m really enjoying them.

I’m really glad you are enjoying my blogs, it is nice to see any time of the day, but especially nice at a quarter of five in the morning when I didn’t want to be awake.

I quite agree that if there is going to be progress made that some sort of collective group needs to form around a few strong leaders that can say, “We’re no different than anyone else. Sure there are some gay oddballs. If you don’t hold them against us, we won’t hold all those straight weirdos against you.”

Please feel free to come back anytime and stand on my soapbox, I keep an extra one just for special guests.
