The Fray by Phillip Bradbury – Book Review

The Fray is a post-apocalyptic novel by newly published author Phillip Bradbury, it’s a blend of science fiction, fantasy and horror and would also greatly appeal to fans of post-apocalyptic fiction. Having been influenced greatly by such authors as Stephen king and Robert Jordan; Bradbury has infused his reverence and obvious adoration of his literary peers into his own work, creating a novel that’s rich in depth, touched with mysticism and twists of narrative that would do Stephen King proud.
Bradbury taps into the themes and plot devices that many fans of these genres are accustom to, yet he delivers them with such originality and conviction that he fills the reader with excitement and curiosity.
The book is set in the distant future where the majority of the world’s population has been overcome by a nightmarish virus Destrachan, that turns its victims into crazed flesh eating zombies. The rest of humanity is enclosed rather insecurely within several reinforced outposts, which have protected them from the continuous onslaught of the undead. Sera and Gabriel from a nearby outpost must fight against time to save humanity by finding the source of the virus, using a foretellers prediction to guide them to victory.
The story is filled with intrigue and many twists that keeps the reader engaged and hungry for more and that’s one of the many reasons why this book succeeds. The narrative is original yet delicately influenced by other works from the horror / fantasy genre. However these influences are ultimately positive and have helped Bradbury create something rather special that I sincerely hope gets the readership it deserves.
