Market Yourself Like a Superstar

Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, Denzel Washington, Oprah Winfrey. Just seeing their names, almost immediately you began to process information about these people in your mind. You know what movies they were in or what T.V shows they appear in. You also know what you like or dislike about them. Rather you are a ‘”fan” of one of them or not, the fact that you know who they are is what all of these celebrities strive for.

One of my favorite actors growing up was Arnold Schwarzenegger. Whenever one of his movies came out, I had to see it! I did not even have to see a preview or trailer, I new whatever movie he was in, it was going to be action packed. He gained me as a fan at first, because I liked action movies. Even though some of his later movies were not all “action” based movies, I was still a loyal fan because of his consistent work early in his career. Because he was able to “brand” his name, he gained a loyal fan base. Look at how powerful this concept can be, he later became Governor, partly because of his name.

In order to have success operating an online business you have to figure out a way to be recognized and remembered. Your main goal in business is to have people remember what you stand for and what your business is about just by seeing your name. This is called self-promotion or branding. Really, even before you start advertising your business, you must clearly know what your brand will be. The entertainment industry has perfected the art of self- promotion. They have taken some no talent “wannabees” and turned them into superstars. They do this by portraying an image and marketing that image to their target audience. Think American Idol, do you think the winners of this show would of had the same success if they had not appeared on the show and tried to sell their album on their talents alone? Absolutely not! We would not know them. American Idol gave these people a platform to display their personalities and talents. The longer they appeared on the show, the larger their fan base became. This is why their debut album sold millions. Fortunately, the internet has some very effective and affordable ways to accomplish this.

The first thing you need to do is market yourself. What are you good at? What are some of your talents and gifts? When choosing your business name, it should coincide with what you and your business will be known for. Do not try to dominate all the different niches, identify who your message will go to. Country singers will probably not advertise on a hip-hop or rap radio station. When you start to promote your business, you must keep your image consistent in all of your advertisements. You can’t be one thing today and something different the next. If you can get this right, your possibilities will be unlimited.
