What a Movie Review is Not

Movie reviews are good to read, especially when you are really interested in the film. Too often, however, a they degenerate into an analysis of the plot of a movie. A movie is simply more than its plot. It is also more than its technical aspect.

There are a lot of things that you can learn from a review, but there are also a number of things that it is not.

A movie review is not a trailer. Trailers are entertaining and informative to watch. It helps you learn about the film and gets you excited to watch it. Trailers help you set your expectation by giving you a sneak peak. A movie review, however, is not a trailer. It is a critical analysis of what makes the film work and what doesn’t.

A movie review is not a term paper. Although reviews may be submitted to college professors when they require it, reviews are not term papers. You do not really need to consult a scholarly article or a film textbook to write a review a film. It helps if you know about film theories. But what you truly need is an extensive experience in viewing movies. If a review sounds too much like a term paper, go find another one.

A movie review is not an advertisement. A review may promote a film but it is not a blatant advertisement campaign. It helps people understand the film better and help them decide whether or not to watch the movie. A movie reviewer who treats his review as an advertisement loses credibility.
