I am more than a little disgusted that we are having to still talk about this. The fact is we do and it crosses every racial barrier in this country. Despite what some people would like you to believe it isn’t just white who are racists. There are plenty of them and since they hold the power in most instances it is easy to vilify them. For the last couple of weeks We have had a black woman on American Idol sing poorly. However even before the show starts a campaign of emails and instant messages begins calling for us to “…save a sista from elimination…”! I have no problem with anyone being proud of the achievements of women or blacks, but this is supposed to be a singing competition where America picks the best singer, however it not only has turned into a teeny bopper popularity contest which is what I believe keeps David Archuleta in it, but now it has become a fight for race. In a year that marks the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Dr Martin Luther King Jr and Bobbie Kennedy, there is so much racism that they’d be rolling over in their graves if they knew.
What I find equally disgusting is how America was willing to open their pocketbooks for those poor Africans Bono and Annie Lennox showed us. We gave millions and the final count isn’t even in, but every time we talk about immigration we say no room at the inn. Is it jobs we are worried about? Is it education we are worried about? Is it the Economy we are worried about? The answer is no to all of those things. The vast majority of Americans are afraid of becoming minorities . This doesn’t just apply to white people either. I know plenty of blacks and and Hispanics who want the government to “just say no“. You can even broaden the field quite a bit when we talk racism and immigration when you consider the number of people who say no to immigration, except the people who look like them or speak the same language, or follow the same religion.
If you want to prove you care and aren’t a racist, then it is time to stand up and be heard. Tell them you understand the fear of war and the divisions that afflict people world wide. Shout out, “Mr President tear down this wall!” Open our borders and let our hearts sing the song for freedom as it can only be enjoyed in this country.
