The Razzie award is given to the worst movies of the year. Many honorees accept them with tongue and cheek grace, some like Lucas and Spielberg do not.
Tonight we have the Oscars, the film industry’s biggest award. But Hollywood cranked out the last of the pre-Oscar awards honoring the polar opposites of quality in film making.
The Razzies honor the worst of the year. The Love Guru ended up as the biggest “winner” of the night taking home Worst Picture, Actor (Mike Myers) and Screenplay. Socialite Paris Hilton was Worst Actress (The Hottie & The Nottie), Worst Supporting Actress (Repo! The Genetic Opera) and Worst Couple with Christine Lakin or Joel David More in The Hottie & The Nottie. Pierce Brosnan was named Worst Supporting Actor for Mamma Mia and the fourth Indiana Jones movie earned the distinction as Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-Off or Sequel.
On the other side honoring the best in independent film making, Mickey Roarke improved his Oscar chances with a Male Lead win at the Independent Spirit Awards. The Wrestler was honored as Best Feature. Other winners included Oscar nominees Melissa Leo (Female Lead) and Penelope Cruz (Supporting Female), James Franco (Supporting Male), Tom McCarthy (Director, The Visitor), Woody Allen (Screenplay), and The Class (Foreign Language Film).
The Screen Actors Guild announced that it rejected the latest and “last” offer of the AMPTP 73% to 27%. They took issue with the AMPTP’s “last minute surprise demand” to extend the proposed deal until March of 2012, well after contracts achieved by other unions. The back and forth between the entities has been dragging on for quite some time with no apparent end in sight. Many television viewers, myself included, just want an agreement made. This is because television is still recovering from the fallout of the writer’s strike. While I, and many others, did find a way to cope (rediscovering old favorites or catching up on new shows I’d heard praised via Hulu and other streaming sites), an actor’s strike would be a huge blow that the industry might never recover from. So I have my fingers crossed, hoping against hope, that the two can see eye to eye and hammer out a contract agreeable to all.
A reminder to all What’s Hot readers, come back tonight for live coverage of the Oscar telecast.
