Retraining in The New Economy

The new economy presents us with many new challenges and ones most people aren’t ready to face. GM is likely to collapse altogether leaving tens of thousands of Americans unemployed not only lacking any new manufacturing jobs, but the skills to get the jobs that are available. For those that choose to accept the challenge of retraining for something completely different, elearning may well be not only their best option, but their only option. Already many big name companies from insurance, to telecom, to manufacturers are hiring elearning educated students and finding them most satisfactory. This is the sort of contingency plan the government needs to get people behind in the failing industries.
When GM does go it will make the current crisis look like a joke, and the government no matter what the radicals on both sides of the debate think will have a necessary role to play in mediating the disaster. Of course in my less than humble opinion we should not only prepare for the disaster now, but take the momentum of a sucky economy to force GM to close. To fix the situation we should just hand every employee who loses their job a one time payout of between $50k and $100k and be done with it. Putting GM out of business and allowing the employees to pay off debt or save for their retirement is not only the sensible thing to do with the company, but the cheapest.
Mark my words when GM comes looking for another handout it will be more costly than this sort of buy out.
