What’s Hot is back!

Pop star Ashlee Simpson and her rocker hubby Pete Wentz had their baby Thursday night. Bronx Mowgli Simpson-Wentz weighed 7 pounds 11 ounces and measured 20 1/2 inches long. Mom and baby were said to be doing well. Many are now speculating as to why on earth they gave the poor boy the name Bronx Mowgli.

Pushing Daisies fans, break out the tissues, your show has for all intents and purposes been canceled. ABC has not greenlit any additional shows for it and two other shows; Eli Stone and Dirty Sexy Money. Daisies wrapped production on its 13th episode last week, at which point series creator Bryan Fuller said he was holding out hope that high-ranking advocates for his show would work some magic. Didn’t happen. Fuller, though, has said that Ned and Chuck’s story, in such a situation, will continue on in comic-book form. I for one wonder if perhaps Fuller will return to Heroes and help out that show.

Stargate Atlantis star Jason Momoa was attacked on November 15. Dominic Bando, 21, who allegedly argued with the actor and hit him in the face with a pint glass, was charged today with assault with a deadly weapon, the Los Angles District Attorney’s Office confirms to E! News. The intergalactic actor required reconstructive surgery and 140 stitches when his face was shattered. This blogger wishes Momoa a swift recovery.

Is it me or is the celebrity dancing show starting to scrape the bottom of the barrel? Now I’ve only ever seen one (partial) season of ABC’s hit but I really think that it’s beginning to show it’s age. They revealed their newest cluster of ‘stars’ who will be competing for the trophy. There’s an Olympic gold medal winning gymnast (Shawn Johnson), a Bond girl (Denise Richards), an former NFL player (Lawrence Taylor), a geek (Apple founder Steve Wozniak), a rapper (Lil’ Kim), and the first ever non-professional couple (singer Jewel and her bull rider husband Ty Murray). Not on the list is Donny Osmond who had said he would appear on the show. He is saying now that he’d prefer to appear in the fall, when he “has more time”. Whatever you say Donny.

The Grammys were handed out last night. Out of the over 100 awards that are issued each year, 10 were shown during the 3 hour broadcast. Allison Krause and Robert Plant made out well taking Record and Album of the year. Coldplay took Song of the Year. Jennifer Hudson took home Best R&B Album for which she thanked her family (those here and those not). May I just ask who the heck this Adele is that won Best New Artist. I freely admit to not being totally current on new music because I knew (by name) only two of the people/acts in that category.

Finally, Chuck spoilers abound thanks to reporting from New York Comic Con and the Chuck panel. Views will be going behind the scenes at Fulcrum. We might get to see Chuck’s first kill (!). Creator Josh Schwartz joked that President Obama’s first order as president was to destroy the show (Obama will be making a televised speech this week, pre-empting the regularly scheduled showing of Chuck). Jill will be coming back and someone may die! Overall it looks like an exciting second half of Chuck.

The Jackson Five (or Jackson 5) was founded in Gary, Indiana with its founding members Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon and Michael. Earlier on, the group was a trio with Jackie, Tito and Jermaine as members. It used to be that two cousins acted as back up who were later replaced by Marlon and Michael, the two youngest Jackson boys.

In 1965, they joined a talent contest and performed their own version of “My Girl”, a song popularized by The Temptations. When they won, their father Joe promised himself to take his boys further into the music world. He acted as their manager and from Indiana, he moved his boys to several other talent contests in Chicago and New York. The year 1966 signaled the group’s way into Motown. They won another talent contest at the Apollo Theater in New York’s Harlem district, and in that same year Gladys of “Gladys Knight and the Pips” recommended them to Motown CEO, Berry Gordy, Jr.

From there, the Jackson Five rose to stardom from their humble origins in Indiana. Leaving his work as steelworker, Joe dedicated himself to developing the talents of his sons. It was Michael, only 6 years old in 1964, who showed an extraordinary gift for singing and dancing. In turn Michael would learn the craft of his role models and tutors. He took careful note of how they phrased a song, moved onstage and interacted with the crowd.

During their successful years, the group sang along the genre of R&B, soul, pop and later disco. However, it was during their six years in Motown that they were considered one of the biggest pop music phenomena of the 70s. Later on, Jermaine and Michael started their own solo careers, with Michael attaining his own share of great success as The King of Pop.

No other group has been lucky enough to chart its first four major label singles to the top of the American charts. These were “I Want You Back”, “ABC”, “The Love You Save”, and “I’ll Be There”. The Corporation was the principal songwriting team that wrote and produced their early hits, while Hal Davis and Gamble and Huff crafted their other hits during their “Jackson 5″ and “The Jacksons” days. In the late-70s, The Jacksons wrote and produced songs for themselves.

With the excellent promotional relation skills of Berry Gordy, Jr., their Motown success made them popular to white audiences, probably a status that was not attained by other black teen idols during their time.

When Diana Ross left The Supremes, Berry Gordy, Jr. took it as a signal and the right time for the Jackson Five to become Motown’s flagship act, and further enhance the reputation of the studio. Gordy gave close attention to the group, and it was under his guidance that their early songs were written, rehearsed and recorded.

The so-called Jackson fever was hitting higher temperatures by summer of 1970, gathering crowds into venues with as much as a 20,000 seating capacity. The group was so popular that it had regular appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show and in many other television shows. Likewise, the group was also able to conquer radio, with their hits being played on several popular stations.

They decided to move to the disco style in the 1970s, reaching Number 2 in the U.S. charts with “Dancing Machine” in 1974. They spent two years with CBS and signed another contract with Epic records. Here, The Jacksons had more control to write, produce and promote themselves. Hit songs such as “Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)” and “State of Shock” were only two of the hits that are their “own”.

When they moved to CBS in 1976, Jermaine who remained in Motown was replaced by their younger brother Randy. They also changed their name from “The Jackson Five” to a shortened “The Jacksons” because Motown owned the rights of the name “The Jackson Five”.

On the other hand, Michael continued to carve a name for him, directing himself and his career only one way – upward. He was the one who got black music in the right places through his multi-million releases, but more importantly changing the perspective of rock audiences towards the new taste of pop. The particular albums that belong in this group are “Off the Wall”, “Thriller”, “Bad”, “Dangerous”, and “HIStory”.

Their 1989 album under Epic, titled 2300 Jackson Street, was intentionally named to refer to their Gary, Indiana street address. However, this album did not sell very well, and it cost them their place under Epic as they were counted out of the company at the end of the year.

After all the ups and downs in their career, the Jackson brothers proved their worth as song artists, especially to black musicians. The songs that they sang with Motown and elsewhere will continue to be loved by the entire world. In 1997, The Jackson Five was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and in 1999, The Vocal Group Hall of Fame.

90-95% of traders turn steady to loose their deposits having studied books by Bill Williams, Alexander Elder, Thomas Demark, J. Schwager, et al. Following the burn down of their first deposit traders plunge themselves again into scrutinizing Forex scholars, in this manner suffering losses of the second, the third and subsequent deposit. I will hereinafter try to elucidate where from the above regularity grows, so that no trader repeats his forerunners' mistakes. Continue reading →

(See beginning of this article under name Forex Secret. Forex Literature As A 90-95% Of The Traders Loose Their Deposit. (Part I)

B. Williams quotes 5 bullets killing a trend, whereas I exemplify their insufficiency and I add up 11 more thereto, not denying the above 5 of them.

B. Williams idealizes the Elliott wave theory, whereas I show that the combination of fives and threes is none the idealizable, otherwise a mankind 100-year development project could have long been elaborated on the basis of Elliott waves pattern, leading to exasperation at the fact that humanity progress does not follow Elliott and Williams. The other thing is that nowadays brokers have mastered the job of manufacturing more waves out of the 5 initially.

The aforesaid is applicable to each of the 20 problems of Forex.

A portion of my live Forex trading methods are to be found in this book, while the other portion thereof is forwarded upon request. Those eager to continue training under my supervision as well as to trade live, please, feel free to contact me on my e-mail address below.
It all could be funny unless it were sad. But IT IS sad, because the above examples are scaring in number. Bearing it in mind, do, go again through excerpts from distinguished scholars books:

- Awesome Oscillator (AO) serves us keys from the Wonderland;

- Accelerator Oscillator (AC) gives us with significant superiority over other traders;

- using AO is similar to reading tomorrow’s “Wall Street Journal”, while using AC is reading of the day-after-tomorrow’s issue thereof;

- by using AO solely, one may attain profits even without any knowledge of current rate; should the oscillator turn down, one may merely ring one’s broker and say: “Sell at the market price!”.

As You have guessed, these are extracts from B. Williams’s “New aspects of Exchange Trade”. Have You read the thing? And now, please, give a glance to the a foregoing figure, depicting the way, the vaunted Williams’s indicators may entail an abyss of losses.

But what truly makes my blood boil is as follows. B. Williams is a professional psycho therapist and his narrative style is none of an incidental one. This is a suggestive method by virtue whereof he attempts to demonstrate the exclusive, correct and faultless nature of his trading technique. The “faultlessness” is to be discussed in an individual chapter, and my only claim here is that I can easily draw hundreds of examples, where one can bump into loss by way of following Williams’s indicators.

By myself, I am an advocate of theory of chaos. But this theory is disclosed by Williams in a very primitive and a superficial manner, which fact results in his blind follower losses. As to the author, he resorts to propaganda methods instead of providing a clearcut distinction between the cases, where the above theory is 100% effective and those, where it is not.
Williams could have explained to his admirers directly, that in these certain instances the theory is to be relied upon, while in these instances it is not to. The difference is in this, this and this. In the former instances one should necessarily enter, whereas in the latter instances one should abstain from entry. But the guy haven’t done the job (due to either not being desirous or to not having sufficient knowledge).

I was a success in finding out distinct operability criteria of the Williams’s technique. To achieve this, I had to improve the Alligator, by virtue whereof I enabled my students to easily pinpoint the difference between the Williams No.1 option (a trend, encouraging profits) and No.2 option (a flat, inflictive of losses).

By the by, it is supportive of the chaos theory methodological correctness and of imperfect Williams’s method structure, plotted on the basis thereof. Instead of acting upon the trader’s consciousness Williams resorts to forbidden subconscious programming procedures, thus stimulating man’s inherent and acquired instincts as if saying: “If You wanna get rich, follow me! My method empowers one to trade without a single glance at a price! The Awesome Oscillator constitutes a key from a Kingdom!” Etc., etc., etc…

Hence, only 1 of 20 Williams’s followers exhibits Forex-earning capabilities in a most favorable environment. Thus, under this statistics, B. Williams is better not to be idolized, the way he has been by the crowd of his admirers. On the other hand, other Forex maestros’ trading techniques are far worse than that of B. Williams. So, let’s continue illustrating Forex truisms being erroneous in live trading.

- The “Theory of Chaos” of B. Williams. The author has not advised what should be added up thereto. A separate chapter here is dedicated to the issue.

- Trader’s psychological problems. I haven’t found any revelations pertaining to THE WAYS OF ELIMINATING THESE PROBLEMS.

- The issue of a stop-loss order is certainly important: even under trend hedging is an indispensable protective shield against market surprise. But is the problem too far complicated to require a dozen pages’ elucidation? Has the author beheld any secret? Wah! He hasn’t noticed anything but he still has repeated all that wanders from book to book on Forex.

Once I was stunned by a question put forward by one of my students after having read B. Williams’s “Trading Chaos”: what’s the use of giving so much attention to the stop-loss problem and above all what’s the good of chewing over the role of safety cushions in the automobile industry as though readers are down with minority?

Doubtlessly, it’s funny reading that Williams has never violated traffic regulations, priding himself on the occasion. Any psychiatrist could tell a hell lot about such a personality type, although, I should admit that Williams is American, not Russian.

Drawing picturesque, memorizing examples, each scholar is right to insist on protective barrier placement as a loss killer. But there is hardly anyone to introduce certain novelty into the issue and to disclose the secret as to what there should be in the trader’s store besides a stop-loss to insure against his deposit melting and extra losses. A separate chapter here is targeted at the issue.

I have shortly come across an aphorism: “Genius is not to the effect, that nothing can be added thereto, but it is to the effect that nothing can be deleted there from”.

If You go through numerous books on Forex at this aspect angle, You are sure to surprisingly find out that 90-100% of their contents may be subject to withdrawal. WHY?
BECAUSE nothing new and 100% correct is offered therein. Instead, reiteration is going on of what is familiar to any professional, since everyone is itching to exhibit one’s originality by way of retelling: a paramount authority of FA over Forex exchange rates; continuation and reversal patterns; a stop-loss importance; a divergence being a component of a trend reversal, etc., i.e. book-to-book travelers.

“An outstanding Forex trading techniques” and “a genius scholar”, etc., making their appearance in books’ abstracts and annotations are off springs of 1% originality added up by an author to 99% of common knowledge.

Sale is publisher’s primary target, giving birth to “genius” mediocrities and plagiarism. Standing separately among these books are opuses by B. Williams, being admired and scrutinized regularly by the majority of scholars and by myself. But EVEN HE cannot be qualified as “genius” with account to the above formula. He is rather “eccentric” than “genius”.

The thing is not, that his technique is addenda-allowing (this fact backs the correct Williams’s choice of the chaos theory to be applied to Forex) and I easily managed to add 11 trend-assassinating bullets to the 5 of Williams. The thing is that a number of Williams’s postulates ARE WRONG and thus loss- inflictive. These can be and should be subject to removal.

CONCLUSION: I guess, it’s understandable by now, that script-writing has turned to be business for scholars, incorporating additional advertising and additional charges for their students. However, the above is not worth millions Forex losers sacrifice.

Much more respect-triggering is Warren Buffet, having made a minimum of USD40 bn at the stock market without writing any books on his trading tactics. W. Buffet is the world’s second-rich man after Bill Gates, although this fact being thoroughly doubtable. B. Gates is supposed to declare the whole of his income obtainable from the Microsoft Corporation, whereas W. Buffet, being a trader, is sure to deem himself entitled to show the Inland Revenue what he really wants to.

The difference is fairly evident. The profit obtained from US companies, constituting the Gates official fortune major portion, may be kept track of, as well as the offshore profits may sometimes be properly checked. But Buffet’s profits attractable at all. Do You expect a man, lending his own daughter a sum of USD20 against a receipt, to allow ALL of his profits to be taxable by state? Or a moderate portion of profits is sufficient, yeah? It is entirely his job, whereas we are to learn to gain at least a spoonful of what he has acquired during 40 years of his activity at the stock exchange.

Thus, to cut it short: a classical Forex literature exhibits but an anti-scientific unsystematic nature, constituting a “crise de genre” and triggering losses among 90% of beginners, abandoning Forex market.

In what does science differ from a philistine and amateur effort? In a systematic and objective nature, in a methodology perspective. In there any of the above to be found with scholar literature on Forex? No, but instead there is in abundance:

A. Tautology and absence of new approaches. From book to book world-distinguished scholars feed traders (as if the latter were silly little chaps) with stories about R&S levels importance, technical indicators, continuation and reversal patterns, etc., which is as interesting and instructive for a professional trader as ABC reading is for a professor of philology.

B. Absence of integrity. Individually, it is all clear: Elliot waves, Fibonacci levels, resistance levels, reversal patterns, etc. But what’s the way it all is interconnected and integrated? In what way it is influential over each other? What is primary and what is secondary? Imagine a doctor diagnoses and cures patients without a slightest idea of interaction of digestive, cardio-vascular and other systems.

This is what exactly happens to Forex beginners. They are sure to have learnt something, but they are being muddleheaded instead of having a systematic knowledge. Medical students undergo a course of anatomy. Geologists and military men make use of topographic maps. And what do Forex beginners have to this end? You are free to interrogate any scientist if he has knowledge of parts of science without having knowledge of the whole. Guess, what he’s gonna answer? And now give consideration to what is being currently published on Forex and being accessible to anyone. Thereafter You will easily “evaluate” the “outstanding contribution” made by each of Forex scholars.

4. Methodology and techniques subjectivism and absence of objectivity. See live scholar, Th. Demark’s “Technical Analysis As An Emerging Science” recommending to manually draw R&S lines from the right to the left instead of so previously doing from the left to the right. The book’s preface qualifies it to be “refined techniques built during a quarter of a century of a laborious scrutiny of market tendencies and projecting methods”. And thereinafter: “Demark’s empiric-data strictly scientific approaches are in striking difference from an artistic intuitive one thus constituting a rational basis for dynamic systems, mechanically outputting market signals.” But, with having not disclosed his system’s essence, is Demark aware that his subjective Forex trading suggestions may happen to entail severe mistakes. Yeah, he substantiates his viewpoint in chapter “Why price projections may not go into effect”: “…due to no technique being perfect”. Good a science with “no technique being perfect”!

Demark is looking rather a philosopher, than a trader with his tirade being nothing but a sophism, made use of as back as in ancient Greece to provide grounds and protection for any kind of absurd.

In accordance to Demark, “a mistake becomes obvious the next day as soon, as the first deal price is registered”. I am itching to ask the scholar: “How many points may a currency travel in a wrong direction during an earth day?” I am answering myself: 100 pts or 200 pts or more. Demark diagnoses: “This instance evidences a breach, indicative of a new opposite tendency”. Well, I’ve got it.

Once there is loss, one should loss-close and enter oppositely.

Take a look at the picture below:

Fig.10. EURUSD H1 chart as of March, 22 – April, 18, 2005 manifesting a month-long flat. (See Note below)

How many days should one per-Demark loss-close with the rate repeatedly swiveling as though to Demark’s ill luck? The scholar has to be asked, how large should a trader’s deposit be to survive Demark’s experiments, being ranked “refined techniques” and “strictly scientific approaches”, “cardinally different from others’ “, less scientific ones, as I can guess.

The opus author will again fall soothing upon You: “One oughtn’t to expect herein outlined technical methods and indicators to offer profits and not to entail losses. Forex trading involves both: a profit opportunity and a loss risk. Preceding results are in no way guarantor of perspective success”. Further on, with greater cynicism and hypocrisy: “Should You be seeking a trading panacea, put this book aside: it’s in no way helpful to You”. Well, what’s the use of buying the book at such price?

Demark, by the way, gives the interpretation of his book’s objective to be “fuelling readers with methodology, encouraging one to systematize various TA techniques”. Great! I thought, it were a new discovery of Forex regularities to be delivered to traders. But it looks, like the scholar has plunged himself into systematizing earlier 50%-correct discoveries without taking any pertinent responsibility.

Hence, no avail to purchase the book and to litter one’s brain therewith, since Forex rates enjoy 50/50 up-down travel chance, even under the probability theory.

Thus, not too much understandable, where Demark’s scientific approach manifestation is to be searched, whereas the essence of things is incomprehensible once the reversal results come evident after an earth day only with no reference to his book.

John G. Murphy, another Forex scholar, outlines in the preface, that the “less art – more science” slogan is specially topical now that greater entities begin taking interest in this area.

As to myself, I have truly appreciated the preface writer Murphy joke as being filled with subtleness and tristesse.

Now, pertaining to science-to-practice correlation and theoretical conclusions implementation… How many scholars of those hundreds referred hereto resort to live examples while teaching long and short entries and close ups thereof? Very few of them:

- B. Williams “Trading Chaos”, “New aspects of Exchange Trading”;

- J. Murphy “TA of Futures Markets”

- S. Nisson “Japanese candlesticks. Financial markets graphic analysis”

- A. Elder “Basics of Exchange Trading”

- L. Williams. “Long-Term Secrets of Short Term Trade”

- Ch. Lebo, D. Lukas “Computer Analysis of Futures Markets”

- D. Swagger “TA, Comprehensive Course”
… and hardly few more.

Disappointing enough, but it is fairly lucid why 90% of beginners mutate into failures and abandon Forex.

By way of getting familiar with the SYSTEM, one will suddenly realize how smooth are Forex artifacts to get apparent one from another, e.g.: M5 Elliott waves constituting M15 wave I, this wave being but H1 and H4 corrective within certain Fibonacci levels.

One gets clear vision of what all the Forex-traded currencies are doing now and what they are going to in half a day. Williams did have grounds to claim, he needs several tens of minutes to analyze tens of charts. He DID have understood Forex as a system, though he has offered but the system components portrayal in his books. Depending on where utilized, the Alligator may appear to be responsible either for a profit or for a loss. But Williams has not even taken pains to present a differentiation between the Alligator being a profit assistant and the Alligator being a loss bringer.

The above is conditioned by the Williams Alligator being a great TA tool, but pertaining to a certain AREA OF Forex only. Other areas require other TA facilities. I will do my best to teach You to effect proper estimation of long-term and super short-term entries being appropriate for the moment.

I will also dwell on why it is not difficult to add extra 11 trend-killing bullets to the 5 of Williams’s; why it is easy to build up a currency travel vector daily projection. The whole thing is minimized to several criteria, being constantly effective irrespective of currency intentions. As a result, You will not have to monthly pay quacking mountebanks’ impotent daily forecasts.

But now let’s move on with Forex scientific criteria. Stagnation and dogmatism are alternative attributes of Forex folios’ anti-scientific substance. Have You ever come across a criticism of any Forex-oriented theory? I mean a weighed objective criticism, assigning credits to the author for elaborating a revolutionary theory, which has by now got obsolete due to a number of objective reasons and thus requires improvement, i.e. replacement.

For instance, I have found nothing of the kind in relation to the 100-year old Dow theory, originally incorporative of benign principles. But life goes on, and there seems no reason to head-hammer life-rectified Dow’s postulates:

- a long-term trend (primary, basic as per Dow) being several years long. Curious enough to spot a currency pair to stand open for so a long period;

- a medium-term trend (intermediate tendency) being several months long. As per Dow, the MTT is opposite (corrective) to the basic trend;

- a short-term trend, not exceeding 3 weeks and incarnating minor fluctuations within the intermediate tendency;

- intraday trend being per-Dow midget ripples, not worth paying attention to.

You are now welcome to take a close look at the figures below, as of October, 2004 through March, 2005.

Fig.11. EURUSD D1 chart. (See Note below)

Fig.12. GBPUSD D1 chart. (See Note below)

CONCLUSION: This theory of Dow’s might be deemed effective rather till late 80s, than presently.

Nowadays, with 3 pips spread, 50-200 pips pullbacks and trends not exceeding a week, the Dow theory

MUST BE recognized as being despairingly obsolete and trader-hostile, since, under a 3-pip spread, it is, certainly, top of recklessness and stupidity to stand open for months or years. A different trend classification is to be called for, meeting updated Forex environment standards.

I guess there’s no need to continue being proponent of the fact that presently Forex theories are obsolete in their majority, with this sort of methodology being requisite for analysts rather than for traders. As opposed, I hold it more appropriate to forward my entry and exit technique to traders willing to conduct successful and loss-safe trading.

By way of prompting: please, attempt to view Forex as a system inclusive of components being familiar to You: Elliott waves, reversal patterns, Fibonacci levels, MAs, ally currencies, etc. All the above staff is integrally intercommunicative rather than existing individually, the way, each organ is in the human body.

I DID have understood it, and I realized the way B. Williams is able to analyze tens of currencies within tens of minutes in order to execute correct long and short entries.

It may look surprising to someone, but a qualified doctor is capable to diagnose Your body hazards after a short examination and talking to You. The doctor has actually examined but several organs, but his knowledge system has empowered him to jump at wider conclusions, as Williams at Forex.

GROSS TOTAL. Steady and regular Forex profits are real opportunity. There is hardly another area which enables one to knock up a fortune without having rich aged relatives abroad, without having to join one’s native country’s throughout corruptible authorities or else. If You have discovered THAT ANOTHER area, You are free to get engaged therein. Then, Forex is not likely to be requisite.

Eighteen years ago today I walked into my mother’s house to grab some dinner. I’d just froze my arse off for fifteen races at Freehold Raceway and was getting ready to spend the night betting Harness races at the Meadowlands. As I checked my mail, I heard my mother yell from the kitchen, “You better turn on the TV, that basketball guy is dead!”

“That basketball guy is dead? What basketball guy?”, I said.

I walked over to the TV and turned it on. We always watched the ABC affiliate in New York and the evening drive sports commentator was Warner Wolf. Within seconds, “We’ve just confirmed that former NBA great Pete Maravich collapsed during a pickup game in Los Angeles, was rushed to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead. Maravich was 40. Details are unclear at the moment but we’ll have a full report on Live at Five.”

I sat down stunned.

For those of you too young to remember, Pete Maravich WAS Showtime 20 years before there was a Showtime. Unquestionably the greatest ball handler and arguably the best “pure” shooter in NBA history, Maravich was undeniably the most creative offensive basketball player ever! Behind-the-back no look passes were common place and Maravich could throw a length of the court one-bounce bounce pass to a wingman on the fly of a fast break and put it in a tea cup. Thirty-five (yes 35) foot pull up jumpers with two guys all over him were generally nothing but net.

The quintessential gym rat as a kid, the 6’5″ 200lb Maravich burst on the scene with his mop of hair and baggy grey sweat socks in 1966 when he enrolled at LSU to play for his father, a former pro and long time collegiate coach, Press Maravich. The NCAA at the time did not permit first year students to play varsity ball so Maravich promptly began his career by averaging 43.6 ppg for the Tiger freshman team.

His next three years at LSU are legend and his scoring records will never be broken. In his three years as a Bayou Bengal, Maravich scored 3,667 points — 1,138 points in 1968, 1,148 points in 1969 and 1,381 points in 1970 — while averaging 43.8, 44.2 and 44.5 points per game. In his collegiate career, “Pistol Pete” averaged an incredible 44.2 ppg in 83 contests and led the NCAA in scoring three times. He also set an NCAA record by scoring more than 50 points 28 times, and was named a three-time All-American.

Maravich holds nearly every major NCAA scoring record, including most career points, highest career scoring average, most field goals attempted and made, and most 50-point games. The three point basket wasn’t introduced until the 86-87 season or Maravich would have easily averaged in the 50 ppg – FOR HIS CAREER!

Maravich was drafted third overall (behind Bob Lanier and Rudy Tomjanovich) in the 1970 draft by the Atlanta Hawks. He quickly alienated himself with his veteran teammates with his play and 1.9 million dollar rookie contract, far and away the largest of it’s time. Maravich still averaged 23.2 ppg and was named NBA Rookie of the Year. After four tenuous years with the Hawks he was traded to the expansion New Orleans Jazz for Dean “The Dream” Memminger and draft picks.

Maravich played five years for New Orleans/Utah before being released in 1980 and finishing his career as a bench player for the Celtics. Maravich was first team all- NBA in 1976 and 1977, leading the league in scoring in ’77 with a 31.1 ppg average. I watched him drop his career high 68 points on the Knicks while being guarded by one of the five best defensive guards of all time in Walt “Clyde” Frazier. The “Pistol” was a five-time all star, inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1987, and named to NBA all-time Top 50 in 1996.

As it turned out, Maravich was born with a congenital heart anomaly and had only one coronary artery. Normally, people have three making his career all the more remarkable.

Like most other unique talents, Maravich was dogged throughout his life for not having won. LSU was 49-35 during his career, 20-8 as a senior and finishing third in the NIT. The Hawks had only one winning season during his stay and NO/Utah was an expansion franchise. In his final season with the Celtics, Maravich averaged 6.0 ppg on a team that lost to the Lakers in the NBA final.

Maravich, who had suffered with knee problems throughout the second half of his career, was invited to the Celtic camp the following year and had made the team but retired after scoring 24 points in just 16 minutes of Boston’s final exhibition game.

Maravich and Dick Butkus were my only two sports idols growing up so his premature death was especially disturbing to me. Besides the sox and hair (who can forget those Vitalis Dry Control commercials), my personal rememberances of the Pistol were a shootout with Notre Dame’s Austin Carr, the 68 point game against the Knicks, and the Horse and One-on-One haftime competitions that were shown at halftimes of the games of the week.

The Pistol had numerous off the court difficulties following retirement until finding peace with the church. He had several ministries and ran Christian Youth Camps right up until the time of his death.

Eighteen years, wow! Seems like yesterday. I didn’t eat or go to the races that night. Rest In Peace Pete Maravich.

Boy bands have been around a while, but what makes them even more unique is when the boys in the band are brothers. Who are some of the top bands of brothers?

1. The Jackson 5- The Jackson Brothers, Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon and of course Michael got their start in 1964. They performed together until 1989. The group was known for their R&B, soul, pop and later disco. This band of brothers was a pop-music phenomenon in the 70s bringing to popularity the idea of family bands. Some of their top songs were “ABC”, “I’ll Be There” and “Dancing Machine.” Not only was the band a success, but the brothers also served as the first black teen idols. In 1976 the band left their label Motown and were forced to change their name. At the time Jermaine was replaced with his younger brother Randy. Later, independent careers were launched from the group, primarily by Michael Jackson, who went on to be a huge success.

2. Menudo – This Puerto Rican teen band was formed in the 1970s initially with two groups of brothers. They included Ricky Melendez, Carlos Meledez, Oscar Melendez, Fernando Salaberry and Nefty Sallaberry. The band achieved great success during the 80s, becoming the most popular Latin American teen group of the era. Their album Quiero Ser launched the group into stardom. Members of the band began getting replaced as the years went on. The last original member Ricky Melendez was replaced in 1984 by Ricky Martin. Martin’s career began from the band as he later went on to be a huge independent success.

3. Hanson – Brothers Isaac Hanson, Jordan Hanson and Zac Hanson formed this group in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Their career hit a high in 1997 with the hit song “MMMBp” earning them three Grammy nominations. The three young boys sang a capella recording popular songs like “Rockin Robin” and even their own material. All three boys started their careers as pianists. Isaac later began playing the guitar and Zac the drums. Creating their own garage band, they recorded two independent albums in 1994 and 1996. The boys were signed by Mercury Records after performing at the Kansas State Fair.

4. The Jonas Brothers – Nick, Joe, and Kevin Jonas make up this American pop rock boy band. The Disney Channel helped bring this band to its early popularity. The boys also started in the Disney movie “Camp Rock.” The band has released four albums; It’s About Time, Jonas Brothers, A Little Bit Longer and Lines, Vines and Trying Times. In 2008 the group was nominated for the Best New Artist award at the 51st Grammy Awards. They have sold over eight million albums worldwide.

5. The Naked Brothers Band – The band consists of brothers Nat and Alex Wolff. The boys began singing in preschool with friends, calling themselves The Silver Boulders. Nat wrote his first song titled “Mama Don’t Let me Cry” at the age of five. Nat was inspired by his jazz pianist-composer father Michael Wolff and music by The Beatles. The band name was coined when the boys as toddlers used to jump out of the bathtub shouting, “We’re the naked brothers band.” The boys were part of a mock documentary, filming them as if they were huge like The Beatles. Film production took place in the family’s apartment in New York City – Nat was 9 and Alex was 6-and-a-half. The film’s notoriety got hem signed with Nickelodeon who put together a TV series “The Naked Brothers Band: The Movie”.

The boys started their first national-tour around the country called Nat & Alex Wolff: Fully Clothed and On Tour, in 2008.

Boy bands most likely will be around for a long time and bands when the boys are related makes it even a more unique phenomena.

“A measure of any society is the way in which it treats its young people…. The nurturing of children – providing them with food, security, love and education – should never be viewed as an altruistic act.” Pat Lancaster

He’s really gone…and now all we can do is haltingly flashback to a kaleidoscope of memories. We are left with memories that bookends the innocence of “ABC” to the idealism of “We are the World” and the introspection of “Man in the Mirror”. Looking back we can’t help but realize that he has always been with us…and somehow we thought he always would. Losing him is like returning to our old neighborhood and finding our favorite places gone. We struggle to get our minds around this; but ultimately we recognize that this is a vacancy that can never be filled.

For many of us-loyal fans included, we could not have dreamed that there was such a deep reservoir of love for him around the world. For the past 13 years he has become perennial tabloid fodder…more superfreak then superstar. “Wacko Jacko”, possible child molester, financially distressed has-been, Peter Pan, a misfit are just a few of the labels the media bestowed on him over the last 20 years. The more charitable observers thought of him as a lost tormented soul at best, who desperately needed therapeutic intervention.

Bubbles the chimp, self-mutilation, Neverland Ranch, Elephant Man’s bones and his hyperbaric oxygen chamber are just a few of the bizarre behaviors linked to him. Many of the stories were blatant fabrications; however, Michael’s publicist sometimes chose not to refute them as they kept people talking.

Of course, dangling his child out of a hotel window and sleeping with children certainly contributed to the idea that he had become undone. Still somehow now, none of this controversy is important. All the concerted efforts of the media to reduce him to a sideshow freak have failed spectacularly as we examine the facts. The London O2 concerts give us an idea of the ferocious loyalty of his fans. 800,000 tickets were sold out in 5 hours and this is nearly twice the sales of his hay day performances back in 1988. The Staple Center Memorial site reports receiving a half billion hits. Amazon reported that 60% of all CD sales were fans buying anything with his name on it. Barnes and Nobles actually sold out of his CDs, DVDs and books.

Even China, a country known for rejecting American excesses, gave him full page coverage on the country’s largest Website, Sina.com. Predictably–Japanese media gave massive coverage to the death of “Michael-san,” as did CNN in Asia. The three biggest cable news networks – CNN, Fox News Channel and MSNBC – averaged 8.2 million viewers in prime-time a figure nearly doubled their normal viewers. BBC reported an increase in viewers second only to the night when Barack Obama was elected President. Russian, South American, Canadian, Australian and African media reaction was equally massive.

It has been 13 years since Michael has toured and many wondered could he really deliver anything close to a smooth moonwalk or the youthful energy of his “Thriller” or “Bad” performances or would this just be another misadventure tailor-made for tabloid consumption. Even the promoters admitted being anxious but could not resist the possibilities and profitability of a Michael Jackson reemergence. The press voiced serious doubts that at 50 he could pull off the grueling 50-date O2 concert. However, video footage of his final days showed that his was poised to give the world one more thriller.

You could not help but wonder was this comeback story more about overly optimistic promoters trying to put Humpty Dumpty back together again. Stories of him having skin cancer and a host of other chronic health problems have always persisted. He reportedly began his descent into prescription drug addiction shortly after his hair caught fire during the filming of a Pepsi commercial in 1984. The 1993 child molestation charges finally pushed him over the edge. Those close to the singer stated that by 1990 he had undergone about 10 plastic surgery procedures prompting some mental health experts to declare that Michael suffered from body dysmorphic disorder. This is a psychological illness that causes one to feel physically repulsive. In 1993 he shared that he had vitiligo in an interview with Oprah Winfrey. In December 2008, Michael Jackson biographer Ian Halperin, stated that he suffered from Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, a potentially fatal genetic illness, as well as emphysema and gastrointestinal bleeding. His management vehemently denied most of this. However, we all wondered as images of him in a wheelchair and his zombie-like gaze during his last molestation trial were circulated.

Despite all the speculation about his mental/physical health status, he passed his physical for Tour Insurance “with flying colors,” according to AEG Live CEO Randy Phillips. The photographer Kevin Mazur who had been following Michael for the past 30 years and was documenting the rehearsals for the tour book stated “Michael was back – that’s all I could say,” Everyone close to Michael from his choreographer to the shows producers agree about this. He looked energized and ready to give the performance that would bring him back to his former glory and maybe beyond. His O2 concert series was to begin in July and be followed by a world tour.

True to form… MJ’s death can not be neatly explained. It seems the King of Pop will remain the King of Tabloid long after he is laid to rest. He has now undergone two autopsies and the cause of death is still inconclusive. Toxicology reports due back in 3 to 4 weeks may shed some light on the cause of death. Police reportedly removed the powerful drug Propofol, marketed under the brand name Diprivan from his Holmby Hills rented home. How this drug came to be in his possession is certain to be pursued by LA police and the DEA.

His personal doctor Dr. Murray and a host of other doctors/enablers will undoubtedly come under further scrutiny even though the Los Angeles police state that presently there is no evidence of foul play. Dr. Murray, a 56-year-old cardiologist with a practice in Las Vegas and a clinic in Houston, has lived in numerous homes over the last decade in several states. His former partner also a doctor in Houston was incarcerated for rather liberally distributing prescription drugs. According to public records Dr. Murray filed for personal bankruptcy in 1992 in California and has five tax liens against him for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Health Grades, a health care ratings company, indicates that he is not board certified in his two specialties, internal medicine and cardiology. While certification is not required to practice a specialty, it is recommended and indicates a high level of training and expertise. We have to wonder why someone of Michael’s stature would hire anyone with less than impeccable credentials.

As we ponder the global appeal of this singular pop star and try to grasp the media frenzy and worldwide outpouring of emotion around his passing we have to ask why we are so transfixed. What is at the core of this phenomenon? This man-child as Paul McCartney so aptly describes him–who for a moment upstaged all world events including wars, the swine flu, the world’s economic collapse and Kim Jong-il’s nuclear ambitions.

Why did the world stand still for this pop star? His shy effeminate demeanor, surgically disfigured face and endless tales of bizarre behavior don’t add up to the Mr. Clean image that idol makers typically package. He was never classically “commercial”. He was certainly not a good fit for the hardcore rocker or hip-hop image because despite the phenomenal sales of the “Bad” album he was much more cute then “bad” when he released this album. In fact, imagining Michael as bad or intimidating is perfect material for a Saturday Night Live skit.

Everyone close to Michael from Deepak Chopra to his manager all agree that his adult years have been deeply troubled and he only seemed to find peace and fulfillment when he was performing and receiving a “fix” from his adoring fans. Interestingly, despite his painful recollections about his father’s abuse, when asked if he would give it all back to have a normal childhood, he said no.

Michael’s refusal to “grow up”- his child-like idealism is perhaps in the end the key to his universal appeal. Our grown up world is a world where 963 million people across the world are hungry and wars inflict incalculable suffering and depletion of valuable resources. Everyday a child dies every five seconds from hunger-related causes. In the past decade around 2 million children have been killed in armed conflict. This is the world of so-called competent grown ups.

When we examine the life and contributions of Michael Jackson we must conclude that he was much more than a song and dance man. His consistent and some say naive messages of love and unity are perhaps why the world is reeling from the loss of this gentle soul. Of course, the media has never widely reported that he has given generously to 39 charities throughout the world. Unsurprisingly, many of these charity’s primary mission was the well being of children.

As we begin to grasp Michael’s universal appeal it becomes clear that this self-proclaimed King of Pop was singular, vast, and timeless enough to be genuinely deserving of this distinction. His magical performances transported us away from the relentless banality/brutality of the REAL world…and allowed us to escape to a musical Never Neverland. For this we are eternally grateful… and we will all delight in his rich musical legacy forever and ever …and ever.

An A-Z rundown of all the things you need to know to get your basic Anime education. Continue reading →

Anime – Anime is the affectionately shortened name for animation in Japan. It’s written in Katakana, as a derivative of English and general refers to any animation conceived and drawn in Japan. There is however a certain style and method to anime that can be recognized the world over as unique to Japanese animation. The simple, exaggerated character features and surprisingly detailed settings along with the actual thematic content, usually a coming of age story of some sort. Some character’s development through a series of trials via uniquely Japanese morals of perseverance and strength.

Baka – Japanese slang for stupid. It’s affectionately used to describe every goofball, oddball, and erstwhile character in an anime. Usually applied by a female toward a male, it’s best defined as the catch all insult for a nerdy, insecure male (and sometimes female) who accordingly does something stupid. Hence, Baka.

Cosplay – The unique and overwhelming practice by anime fans the world over of dressing as their favorite anime and video game characters for the sake of meeting up with other extreme fans and comparing their realism. Because anime is drawn (mostly) to scale, and the clothing is generally brightly colored and completely impractical, characters are easily recognized on those who have a particular talent in this arena. Expos are held for cosplayers annually, as well as contests. It’s something of an underground phenomenon in the culture that’s become much less underground in recent years.

Doujinshi – The Japanese word for fan created manga based on existing characters. Pretty much the anime equivalent of the Star Wars novels. There’s a huge market for these fan created fictions in Japan, and because of the massive pool of talent they’re often of equal or greater quality than the source material. Seems like a good way to go. Keep your future employees on the outside, drawing for free.

Ecchi – A Japanese word that roughly translates to ‘pervert’. Basically it’s used to describe all those school girl animes in which the skirts stop about two inches above their panty line, and yet somehow magically stay on. It’s not quite the caliber of Hentai as it tries not to be pornographic, but the fan service and suggestive themes quotient are fairly off the map.

Fan – For American anime connoisseurs especially, the fan is one of the only ways to get access to some anime, and until recently pretty much the only way. Fan stands for Fansubbing (the fan produced subtitling of shows ripped straight from Japanese television ), Fandubbing (the slightly less done, and often much funnier dubbing of the same material by fans), Fanfiction (the written form of Doujinshi, often involving a whole lot of Ecchi), and Fan Service (in which a show will purposely do something over the top or suggestive because they know that’s what their fans are looking for). The fan is what floats the market for anime, especially in America where until very recently the market was mostly a blackmarket.

Gundam – One of the original fathers of anime. Around for 25 or more years now, Gundam has produced more than 25 series and movies since it debuted in 1979, and continues to be one of the most popular series on each every year, with an exponential growth of productions of late. The show was one of the pioneers of the giant mech anime and an underground favorite in America for years….and it makes for some pretty funny cosplayers.

Hentai – And of course, with any art form, when you have a large enough fan base, someone perverts it. Pornographic anime has something that normal pornography does not though, lots of creepy weird tentacles and occasionally a plot. Yes, in line with many of Japan’s finer arts, Hentai does try occasionally to inject a bit of intelligence into their mindless sex. And the production quality tends to be higher even than normal productions. Speaks to the nature of porn, I guess. It runs the industry.

Idol – The idol mentality runs the Japanese pop culture sphere. Their singers are everywhere, their movie stars are singers, their movie-star-singers are tv hosts. Their movie-star-singer-tv-hosts are voice actors. It’s all cyclical and it means mass exposure in a crowded country of a 140 million. And it leaks over in the shows they make, and the mass production of the shows (usually one a week every week until the show’s done…for some shows that’s years) and the production values all speak to this.

Jump – Shonen Jump is the monthly manga publication in Japan that broke some of the biggest names in anime. Dragonball, Naruto, One Piece, Kenshin and so on. The super popular children oriented anime that rules the charts comes out of this little gem repeatedly. And now it’s here in the US. Power in circulation.

Kawaii – Japanese adjective for cute. And that’s how you describe half of what they produce. Super cute, to the point of nausea at times. The ability to turn the ugliest, most disturbing things into cute and cuddly mascots is a distinctly Japanese ability. Just look at half of the Pokemon. Butt ugly, but cute nonetheless.

Love Hina – Love Hina didn’t invent it, but it did it best – the dorm fantasy anime that is. And it is its own subgenre now. A dorky young male who has no luck with the ladies finds himself thrown into a situation where he’s surrounded by women daily, who ultimately assault him and make his life a living hell, at the same time as falling in love with him. Ecchi moments abound and often our altruistic hero ends up with a bloody nose on the rocks outside of a hotspring somewhere.

Manga – Ah yes, the birthparent of the whole thing. Manga is the comic book, hand drawn formula for the whole craze. Started as an offshoot of the woodprint art forms of the 19th century and earlier, Manga took compelling stories and serialized them into fun, easy to read comic books. Not to say that the Supermans and Detective Comics of America didn’t help this fad along.

Neon Genesis Evangelion – A derivative of the giant mech anime, Evangelion broke into new legions of fans by being what some anime had dared before, but few had fully succeeded at – mature and intelligent. A common enough theme these days, Evangelion managed to take biblical, complicated social, and personal themes and craft them into an often times funny, apocalyptic epic 24 episode series and 2 films.

Otaku – in what is actually an insult in Japan, translating roughly as ‘you’…but more commonly known as ‘no-life geek who spends all his time building GUNDAM models…’ The definition is slightly less caustic on our side of the Pacific, generally referring to someone who merely enjoys the depths of Japanese pop culture, watches anime after school, and draws characters from their favorite shows on their notebooks. More of a clique in school than a mock-worthy subculture. But, that is quickly changing of course, as the anime arena is growing so rapidly here in the states.

Pokemon – Pokemon is the new generation of child-oriented anime born of marketing necessity, used to sell video games, video games used to sell the show. It’s been on for almost 10 years now, and still new episodes pop up. If the Japanese do anything right, it’s sell stuff, and Pokemon continues to sell, actually marketing to an entirely new generation of kids these days.

Queen Emeraldas – I’m copping out a bit here because Q as we all know is the crappiest letter in the alphabet to do an ABC list with. Queen Emeraldas is a good anime though. An OAV produced in 1998 as an offshoot of the Harlock and Galaxy Express 999 series, Queen Emeraldas continues the story of a popular character that if you haven’t seen either of the previous shows will make no sense to you.

Rurouni Kenshin – Kenshin is the epic tale of a wandering samurai in the Meiji era of Japan known as Kenshin. He finds a small martial arts school in the new capital and after saving the young heir he stays with her and undertakes various quests to help the government which he helped to form a few years earlier survive. He’s an incredibly badass swordsman and attracts a nice little entourage of characters. I don’t know if it’s the most important thing in the world in terms of anime, but it’s one of my favorite shows, so it’s on the list.

Shoujo – The term used to describe anime targeted to young girls. All the Sailormoons and Cardcaptor Sakuras out there fit here. It’s actually a nice niche to have and does extremely well here as well as Japan. It’s a testament to the popularity of a sub culture when it actually takes the time to stop drawing violent battles between half witted males to appeal to young girls as well.

Tezuka Osamu – The Walt Disney of anime, Dr. Tezuka created Astroboy, Kimba the White Lion, Metropolis and countless more anime classics that more or less established the art form. He’s the guy you want to look at whenever you ask, “who’s responsible for all this?”

Urusei Yatsura – A monstrously popular 1970s and 80s franchise spanning almost 200 episodes, 10 movies and a handful of OVAs. It’s pretty much about a group of “obnoxious aliens” (the actual translation) that invade and goof up earth. They’re all girls, and were a part of the beginnings of what made Love Hina happen, a lecherous teenage boy surrounded by strange, sexy women. Yup, they sure know how to make shows over there.

Voice acting – Come on. It is animation right? Unlike the US animation sector, Japan’s voice acting pool is vast and actually talented. US companies use the same people over and over and pay them peanuts, and they generally suck at what they do. In Japan, the respect from doing what they do is that much more pronounced…and they don’t suck.

Wings of Honneamise – Another landmark anime, this is the first film produced by super studio Gainax (the guys who did Evangelion among others). It’s essentially a science fiction, military fantasy with some twists to history and technology. One of my favorite examples of how anime bends the genres in which it operates as well. It’s out there and that’s why we love it.

X – Yup, just X. From Clamp, a group of female artists whose fan base (and quality of workmanship) is obscene, X is one of their earlier films, later made into a series. The style is best described as Shoujo without the service to only girls.

Yaoi – The slightly homosexual version of Ecchi, Yaoi is usually a homoerotic fan service of male characters in typical situations acting sexually ambiguous and often getting rather close to each other. When out put is so great, you can expect anything right, and the chic-gay of Yaoi is immensely popular in Japan.

Z, Dragon Ball – I cheated again, so what. Dragon ball Z was one of the key reasons that anime spread to the mainstream here in the states after all, with a couple hundred episodes and memorably long (and I mean looooong) fights, Dragon ball Z captured the fan base of all the young violence prone kids nationwide and kept them enthralled into their 20s (yeah, yeah…quit looking at me).

And there you have it. 26 keys to understand the anime sub culture, a veritable A-Z of what you need to know…minus Q and Z.

With the cost of everything on the rise, it is important to cut corners where you can and remain connected to the outside world. Cable television allows you to stay up to date with current affairs and enjoy watching your favorite entertainment television shows at the same time. However, there is plenty of extraneous features that you probably don’t need and didn’t know you could get rid of, which could save you money in the long run.

Start by analyzing your cable bill. What exactly are you being charged for? More importantly, what are you using and what are you capable of getting rid of? This is the tricky part. Cable companies often offer programming packages in such a manner where they combine popular channels with less popular channels in an attempt to get you interested in those other channels (as well as make you pay for them since they are included in the package). What this all boils down to is if you love your PBS and are not so interested in ABC family, then you’re probably out of luck and are stuck paying for both of them.

Of course, should you be happy with a basic line-up of your local television channels, you can always look into purchasing an outdoor antenna. If purchasing an antenna is out of the question or your local broadcasting area is too rural for this option, you may want to purchase only local channels from your cable company. By doing this, you are guaranteed to get those channels regardless of bad weather or the area you live in, something an antenna cannot guarantee.

If you are Internet savvy and don’t mind watching your favorite television programs a day or two later than their original air date, you can look into sites like Hulu.com or TV.com. Both of these websites offer the ability to watch television shows that have previously aired for free. If you are ok with not knowing who won American Idol at the precise time the results are released, than this is definitely a great option to look into.

By taking advantage of free programming on the Internet, there really is no reason to succumb to paying for cable channels or programming that you do not use. Following some of these simple guidelines can help you eliminate or cut your cable bill in half, in essence taking control away from the cable company and putting some money back in your pockets.

Just after Greg Raymer won the 2004 World Poker Championship, I met him at the Bicycle Casino in Los Angeles, CA. When I asked him what counsel he had for people learning to play poker, he said that players often feel they must use fancy moves to win at poker. When, in fact, ABC poker will usually get them much further, especially in tournaments.

With that in mind, here are my Poker/Life ABC’s. For me, within each poker lesson, there is a life lesson.

A is for Action. There are five actions in poker: check, bet, fold, call, or raise. Before you decide on what action to take, pause, take a moment, and ask yourself, “What is today’s correct action based on the information at hand?”

B is for Breathe. Remember to breathe and move to the moment before you take action.

C is for Courage. It is that courage to take action, even when fear overwhelms you.

D is for Vitamin D. Long hours at the computer or poker table can cause a lack of Vitamin D and negatively affect your mind.

E is for Energy. Everything is energy. What gives you energy? What makes you powerful? Write it down. Seek it.

F is for Feedback. Noah St John calls feedback your Loving Mirrors, people who lovingly help you see yourself truthfully.

G is for Go for It! That’s what my mom, at 83, says when I ask her advice. “Step out there and take a risk!”

H is for Halo Effect. That is when players prematurely profile opponents based on incomplete information.

I is for Instinct. Just as gathering information is critical, so it trusting your instincts.

J is for Joyful. Approach each situation joyfully and watch what happens. Some people may even think you are nuts.

K is for Keep ‘em guessing. Change up your style of play so your opponents are unable to put you on a hand.

L is for Luck, the intersection of preparation and opportunity. We give ourselves the chance to become lucky or unlucky.

M is for Mindfulness. Poker and life are best when played in the moment.

O is for Opportunity to see the good in each situation. It is easy to find the good in a win… but in a loss?

P is for Position. Poker and life are more successful when played from the most favorable position.

Q is for Quiet your mind. Sometimes, I think too much at the poker table. Most of the time, I think too much in life.

R is for Release fear, guilt, and blame. Release that which no longer serves you.

S is for Should’uv, which has no place in poker or in life.

T is for Trust your gut. Stop. Observe. Gather information. Add in your gut feeling. Trust it, and go for it.

U is for Understand yourself. If someone understands you better than you understand them, they control the communication.

V is for Vision of Victory, the art of changing any loss into a win.

W is for the Why question, “Why am I a winner?”

X is for X-factor. Phew! Google shows 55+ million results for X-factor! On American Idol, Simon Cowell says the X-factor is the illusive something that makes for star quality.

Y is for that Y-moment when the YES word finally penetrates your doubts and say: “Yes, I can! Yes, I will! Yes, I am!”

Z is for Zero in the pot. With nothing to win, do you still have to be right?
