In their upper middle class home, with their upper middle class front lawn but with an old BMW car, Dick Harper (Jim Carrey) lives with his wife, Jane Harper (Tea Leoni) & family. Upon becoming the new Vice President of communications at Globadyne, the company folds & he loses his job in the Fun with Dick & Jane movie (2005). What makes it worst is that his wife had recently quit her job; which to make it worst was his idea & both of them are now destined to endure the financial difficulties that approaches them. It is the upper middle class financial nightmare that the couple endures in the remake of the 1977 Fun with Dick & Jane movie.

It seems that Dick Harper has reacted too much & too soon about his job promotion along with his wife, Jane Harper in the Fun with Dick & Jane movie. Little did he know that becoming the Vice President of communications at Globadyne was part of a sinister plot by the company’s scheming CEO, Jack McCallister (Alec Baldwin). Alec does seem to have a knack for playing the bad guy who thinks life is about getting away with a lot of money after ruining people’s lives. He plays the character very well with his suave “I could not care any less” persona. The CEO (Chief Executive Officer) took $400 million siphoned from the now bankrupt company, Globadyne.

The people who suffer most are the employees of Globadyne. They trusted the company with everything they owned, including their savings & retirement bonds. They had no idea that the company that they entrusted embezzling their money. The Fun with Dick & Jane is all about the struggle faced by the previous employees of Globadyne particularly Dick. The beauty of the story is that through thick & thin, from being honest income earners to criminals like Bonnie & Clyde, the beautiful couple held strongly together. As petty thieves, Dick Harper & Jane Harper find out that they are actually good together as a team, performing illicit activities. Tea Leoni is a sexy co star & blends well & complements his antics.

Dick & his wife somehow managed to trick their way to the $400 million of money siphoned by the scheming Globadyne CEO, Jack McCallister. I reckon Dick Harper & Jane Harper deserves to keep a few million dollars for themselves since they did all the hard work. On the other hand, maybe is trying to emulate Jack’s character. It would be a more suitable ending for the scheming Globadyne CEO, Jack McCallister to go to jail. The moral would be to not invest all your money at the company where you work & depend on the uncertain pension plan from a Million Dollar company. It is less likely to be hearing the same bad news from billion dollar companies; well except for the likes of Enron.

So now that the winning is over, it’s time to review the choices, the fashion and the overall mood of the show.

For more coverage you can go to MSN, Entertainment Weekly, People, E! online, TVGuide or USA Today. In the meantime, here are my thoughts.

There were a few surprises in the movie categories. Kate Winslet with her double wins for The Reader and Revolutionary Road. Will this finally be her year at the Oscars? Colin Farrell as Best Actor in a Comedy. Mickey Roarke as Best Actor in a Drama (at least I thought it was a surprise). And the biggest shocker, Slumdog Millionaire taking all the awards it was nominated for: Best Score, Best Screenplay, Best Director and Best Picture Drama.

As the Oscars will be announced on the 22nd of this month, that means that ballots have to either be in already or be in by this week. If it’s the latter, I wonder just a little as to how much influence the winners here might have on those who’ve yet to vote.

For television, the drama category was dominated by cable, the comedy by NBC and the mini-series/TV movie by a founding father. Gabriel Byrne won Best Actor Drama for In Treatment, Anna Paquin Best Actress Drama for True Blood and Mad Men took Best Drama for the second year in a row. 30 Rock got Best Comedy and acting honors for Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey.

John Adams took all but one of the mini-series/TV movie awards. Laura Dern took the Supporting Actress statue for Recount.

Most of the fashions I saw were severely lacking or not all that inspired. Eva Mendes has this ruffle/draped/who the hell knows what it was thing hanging off the front of her dress. Maggie Gyllenhall had a poofy one-shouldered dress that for me harkened back to the 80s. Sandra Bullock had ruffles that would have been better had they just been contained to the bottom of the dress.

Eva Longoria Parker however was absolutely GORGEOUS in red. Christina Applegate was understated in yellow. Drew Barrymore should have tamed her heair betterm but her ice-blue dress was stunning.

Overall it was a great ceremony, something the Oscars need to take note of, short and on time. Tune into What’s Hot on the 22nd when I liveblog the Oscar announcements.

Sean Connery and Alec Baldwin star in The Hunt For Red October, a brilliantly conceived storyline drawn from the pages of military thriller and superstar writer Tom Clancy’s first novel. Blessed with a cutting-edge plot and dripping with suspense, The Hunt For Red October is one of the best Soviet/US spy films ever produced (and right on the cusp of the Cold War’s end). Perhaps the Soviet Union’s collapse was hurried along by its fear of a civilian populace that could write stories so close to reality. After all, if a US civilian could estimate the capabilities of the new Soviet submarines, what had their government uncovered? Regardless of its real life implications, The Hunt For Red October is an entertaining film rivaled by few in its class

When Captain Marko Ramius (Sean Connery) is appointed to command the newest and most technologically advanced submarine in the Soviet fleet – the Red October, he orders his crew to do the unthinkable – defect to the United States. Diverting the sub from its designated course, he causes alarm among the ranks of the entire Soviet military establishment. The United States takes notice as well, informed by the Soviet Union that the renegade commander is intent on attacking the United States.

But CIA operative Jack Ryan (Alec Baldwin) has another theory. Suppose that Ramius was attempting to defect? Would the Soviet Union really inform its greatest enemy of a defection, or would they simply attempt to enlist its services in immediately destroying the sub? Ryan banks on the latter and does everything within his power to convince the top brass that he’s right. Now, the hunt is on between the two largest superpowers in the world. Which one will find the Red October first?

The role of Jack Ryan, so brilliantly portrayed by Alec Baldwin, falls to Harrison Ford for the next two Tom Clancy novels adapted to the big screen – Patriot Games and Clear And Present Danger. Ben Affleck would later star in the role of Ryan for the 2002 film release of Sum Of All Fears. But Baldwin is clearly in command of the character in this initial onscreen depiction of the now famous Jack Ryan.

However, the true star of The Hunt For Red October is Sean Connery, the former James Bond regular, who plays the role of Captain Marko Ramius. Connery is more than believable as the headstrong, renegade commanding officer of the Red October. In addition to its strong casting, The Hunt For Red October is further enhanced by the screenwriter’s decision to stick as close as possible to Tom Clancy’s original work. A surprising #1 best-seller, The Hunt For Red October became a national phenomenon following its less than ambitious initial print-run of 15,000 copes by the Naval Institute Press. Its best-seller status wasn’t the result of luck, as this film will attest. The first in a series of blockbuster Jack Ryan films, The Hunt For Red October is a definite must-see film no one should miss…

BOTTOM LINE: The stirring performances and thought-provoking subject matter will grip you in this complex tale of life and death, but a lack of directorial focus and overt sentimentality ruin what could have otherwise been a great film.

THE GOOD: “My Sister’s Keeper” delves in to the lives a family coping with the terminal illness of one of the children Kate (Sofia Vassilieva) who has a leukemic cancer. Mother Sara (Cameron Diaz) is a fighter and is prepared to do anything to save her; this leads her to follow an under-the-table suggestion by her doctor to create another child in a test tube who can be ‘harvested’ for donor material to keep Kate alive. This child turns in to Anna (Abigail Breslin) who after years of being subjected to medical donor treatments, decides enough is enough and hires celebrity lawyer Campbell Alexander (Alec Baldwin) to sue her parents for the rights to her own body. This idea surprisingly does not become a large focus of the film, with director Cassavetes choosing to focus more on the character interactions and the presentation of terminal illness in the character of Kate. The film works well in these character moments, with Kate proving to be the strongest of them all through the acceptance of her fate and trying to hold her family together. Cameron Diaz deserves big marks for her performance as she is completely convincing as the driven mother determined to do whatever it takes; in many ways, she is a monster and unlikeable in how she uses Anna, but in other ways, the ‘Captain Ahab’ nature of her character that Diaz brings to it makes the character more three-dimensional and forgivable than that. Other factors such as the sequences in the hospital which show the pain and suffering that cancer sufferers go through is compelling to watch, as are the touching character moments between the ensemble cast, and all the actors are to be commended. The film is genuine and believable in its presentation of a terminal illness, and in this respect, it is hard not to be compelled by it.

THE BAD: Despite the noble themes and strong performances, “My Sister’s Keeper” is somewhat unfocused and overtly sentimental. Nick Cassavetes is an actor first, and in this respect, his direction of the actors is second to none, but his ability to look at the big picture is lacking. The film meanders from place to place, jumping backwards and forwards in time and not providing a smooth transition between any of them. Flashbacks become huge long sequences in the film to the point where when we return to the original narrative, we have almost forgotten that that is where we came from. The premise is also contrived somewhat, in that the ‘designer-baby’ idea is almost arbitrary and forced, at least in relation to what else is happening in the film. There are also some not-so-well handled moments, mainly revolving around Alec Baldwin’s character of Campbell Alexander; his epileptic fit during the court room sequences is almost comically handled, when the idea underlining it is quite serious. Unfortunately, the film is undermined further by the manipulative sentimentality constructed from many sequences; aside from one genuine moment where Sara breaks down and Kate comforts her at the end, there are many “tear-jerking” moments that have been put in by design as opposed to being genuine. All these elements drag the film down, which is unfortunate as the subject matter is quite strong.

BOTTOM LINE: Vulgar, disgusting, offensive and occasionally funny, “My Best Friend’s Girl” does not actually fall down on these points but rather its inconsistent, stupid and implausible plotting and execution.

THE GOOD: Tank (Dane Cook) has a talent for being the ultimate bad boy, so much so that men hire him to take their ex-girlfiends out on dates that are so terrible that when Tank is finished, the ex-girlfriend goes running back in to their ex-boyfriend’s arms. Things go pear-shaped when Tank’s cousin Dustin (Jason Biggs) hires him to take his would-be love Alexis (Kate Hudson) on a lousy date. However, Tank gets more than he bargained for as Alexis is in the mood for ‘experimenting’ and ‘living life’, making it almost impossible for him to succeed. The scenario in this film leads to some funny sequences, least of all being the date Tank has with a conservative religious girl, or the scene where Tank picks up Alexis for the first time and his first bad-boy moment does not work. The cast are quite likeable, leading with Dane Cook and Kate Hudson who do their best with the material. The most enjoyable aspect to the film would have to belong to Alec Baldwin’s supporting role as Tank’s pig of a father Professor Turner who is so self-obsessed and clinically funny in his appraisal and treatment of women that it is very funny to watch in its extremity (his A-Z ranking system is hilarious).

THE BAD: The film falls down in that it is inconsistently plotted and completely implausible. Tank’s character is the worst guy you could come across, which makes the obligatory happy ending where he ends up together with Alexis all the more unbelievable. His behaviour at Alexis’ sister’s wedding is so detestable (complete with propositioning her mother for oral sex), despite it being funny on its own, that one cannot find any sort of justification for how Alexis would in the end decide to be with him. The film also gravitates back and forth between Tank being the bad boy and Tank learning how to be the good guy again which never really comes off as both are executed from such extremely radical positions that he is almost playing two different characters. “My Best Friend’s Girl” would have been better served if it stayed completely in the vulgar and offensive camps rather than trying to toe the line between that and a traditional romantic comedy.

If you haven't seen The Departed yet you are missing out on the greatest movie off all time. Read my The Departed movie review to find out why. Continue reading →

The Departed is likely to go down as Martin Scorseses greatest masterpiece. While based on the Hong Kong film, Internal Affairs, The Departed is certainly a unique work. The storytelling was completely engrossing with never a dull moment in the entirety of the film. With such a star studded cast the opportunity for a let down was huge, but The Departed blew away any expectations I had.

I have never seen a movie where so many star actors give the best performance of their career. Matt Damon has been brilliant in many of his previous roles, but took it to a whole new level in this film. It seemed as if Nicholsons escalated his performance as to not be outdone by his fellow cast mates. Even DiCaprio haters will be wonderfully surprised by his character. I think DiCaprio plays up to the level of the material he is given, as he was able to do some wonderful things in this movie.

Mark Wahlberg, Martin Sheen, and Alec Baldwin, who would normally be headliners, lifted the film even higher with their supporting roles. Wahlberg provides some incredibly funny comic relief, and is surprisingly one of the most likable characters in the movie. These actors may have had limited screen time, but they were able to take that time and give our incredibly memorable performances. Its rare to see a film where a supporting cast is able to make such a lasting impression on the viewers.

The Departed focuses on the thin line between good guys and bad guys, and from the law and the criminal. You get to look inside each characters head and try to figure out exactly what their motives really are. Just when you think you have everything figured out Scorsese throws in a twist that has you questioning every thing youve seen so far.

I judge a films greatness by its ability to evoke emotions in me. After viewing The Departed I had to sit in my seat for 10 minutes just to catch my breath. The plot builds so perfectly that when it finally ends it hits you like a ton of bricks. This film may have been the closest I have seen to perfection. It provided more laughs than most comedies, and made me feel strong emotions for all the characters. I cant wait for this movie to win best picture, as it has been a long time since a truly deserving movie has won.

It’s been a slow weekend for entertainment news, but What’s Hot has got what you want!

Lisa Marie Presley and her husband, Michael Lockwood, welcomed twin girls into their lives on Tuesday. No names for the twins who weighed in at 5 pounds 15 ounces and 5 pounds 2 ounces. Presely, daughter of the King of Rock and Roll Elvis and Prisilla Presley, has two older children; Riley, 19 and Benjamin, 15. “She wanted it really to be kept a secret for a long time,” the singer’s mother, Priscilla Presley, told Entertainment Tonight, which broke the news. “And I think women should, because they should be able to announce what they’re having and when it’s time to make the announcement.” Mom and babies are resting comfortably.

ABC is hoping to duplicate the success that the Sci-Fi Channel has had with the revamping of Battlestar Gallactica, announcing that they have given the go ahead for a rebooting of the 80′s hit, V. The series was about alien lizards taking over Earth. The man behind USA’s hit, the 4400, Scott Peters will write and executive produce the update for Warner Brother’s TV. And instead of allusions to the Holocaust, the update will allude to 9/11. Original V mastermind Kenneth Johnson is not involved with this new production and has plans of his own to try and make a V movie.

It’s not a ringing endorsement of either series, but Fox has ordered two more episodes of The Sarah Connor Chronicles while NBC’s Knight Rider is getting four more episodes. Matthew Weiner and AMC are still in negotiations for a third season of Weiner’s Emmy winning Mad Men. NBC is confirming that Latina hottie Selma Hayek is going to have a recurring role on 30 Rock as a love interest for Alec Baldwin’s character. She’ll have at least a four episode arc.

What’s Hot talks about last night’s Emmy awards. I hope you enjoyed the liveblogging of the show, but here we are to discuss the winners, the losers, and the fashion in a little more depth.

Let’s start off with the fashions, shall we? Christina Applegate wore a Reem Acra number that many seem to be praising. But I’m going to say what I said last night in my live blog, it looks like she just took a bolt of fabric and wrapped it around herself. No offense Christina, but it just doesn’t do it for me. Now Julia Louis Dreyfuss’ Narciso Rodriguez salmon number was to die for. I wish I could pull off that color. America Ferrera was stunning in black Fred Leighton, proving that real women do have curves.

Okay, now let’s talk best/worst moments. The opening bit with the five hosts left a lot to be desired. It seemed to me that Howie and Jeff monopolized all the time and it just didn’t work. If it had been left out it might have helped out at the end when the show was starting to be pressed for time. Also in that same vein, I personally think we could have done without showing of bits of famous show’s sets, another time waster. I know they were celebrating 60 years of television, so let’s do just that. Because of the time crunch they weren’t able to show the best moments in television, which is something that ABC had been promoting on their website leading up to the show. But enough of the bad. The best bits for me were Ricky Gervais needling Steve Carrel about his Emmy and Steve not showing any emotion (while Stewart and Colbert laughed it up in the background). Josh Groban singing TV theme songs; yes it might have looked uncomfortable to some and I do feel for Josh a little, but overall it had me grinning and laughing and I found it one of the highlights of the evening. The lack of political commentary. One joke by Howie at the beginning, a bit of schtick with Stewart and Colbert and the urging of the general public to vote by the people involved in Recount and by Martin Sheen.

Winners and losers. Jeff Probst survived the night and emerged victorious as the first recipient of the Emmy for Host of a Reality Show or Reality Based Competition. The older ladies were out in force as we had Dianne Wiest (Supporting Actress Drama), Jean Smart (Supporting Actress Comedy) and Glenn Close (Actress Drama) all garnering awards. Zeljko Ivanek and Jeremy Piven were winners in the Supporting Actor categories (Drama and Comedy respectively). Alec Baldwin nabbed his very first award in the Lead Actor Comedy category. Tina Fey took home three awards for 30 Rock, including Lead Actress in a Comedy and Best Comedy. Much to my surprise (and delight), James Spader did not take home the Lead Actor Drama award, that honor went to Bryan Cranston. And in what seems to be the biggest upset/surprise of the night, Mad Men took home the Best Drama prize. So it looks like the major networks need to start doing something with all of these cable shows taking home the gold.

That’s it for today, tune in tomorrow for more from the world of entertainment.
