Alexis Grace is in the audience, I bet she’s wishing the judges had used their save for her. David Cook is coming up later, even though I know it’s a pre-taped performance, I can’t wait. I am certainly an unabashed Cook fan. I don’t think my Idol experience will ever measure up to last season’s win.

We get the Ford video early this results show. I really hate these things and I understand the contestants don’t like them either. I don’t blame them, the filming of them take away from rehearsals. And now, the group sing. Honoring Randy’s former band, Journey with “Don’t Stop Believing”. Scott is ‘playing’ the keyboards on stage. There has been debate about over the “pre-recording” of the group songs. This certainly was because when Scott did his solo his mouth was no where near the damn mic. I kinda feel sorry for him.

Now, we get to the results. No, wait, behind the scenes film first. Damn filler. Matt as impersonater. Danny does Matt, Anoop does Kris, Allison does Danny. Good to know they can laugh at each other.

Results. Megan is first up. Megan, Matt and Kris all stand up. Ryan send them all over to the other side of the stage. Adam, Lil and Allison all stand now. Ryan send them to the center of the stage. Danny, Anoop and Scott are left on the couches. One of these groups is probably the bottom three. My guess is the first group but if so, I’m surprised to see Kris there.

Back from commercial and we have Cook’s performance of “Come Back To Me”. Cookie is looking awesome. Of course his mom is in the audience. Awwwww. I will fully confess here that I am singing along. I may have the entire David Cook album memorized. He just said he’s extended his tour. I must check his website to see if he’s added stops in my state. I WANT TO SEE DAVID COOK!

Back to the results. Kris, is safe. Lemme guess, one from each group is in the bottom three. Matt, is safe, after a bad joke from Ryan. Megan, is in the bottom three. Lil, is safe. Allison, is in the bottom three again, boo! Adam, is safe. I so called it, one from each group. Danny, is safe. Scott and Anoop now. Anoop is in the bottom three, Scott is safe. BOOOOO!!!

EEEEEEEEEEEEE!!! *FLAIL* There was just a commercial for a local college that is going to be hosting David Cook on May 27th!!! I know what I want for my birthday now!

Lady Gag is on now and the TV is on mute. She’s kinda annoying.

Allison is safe, leaving Anoop and Megan standing there. I’m hoping for Megan joy Corkrey to go. It’s Megan!!! *sigh of relief* Ryan asks Simon if they’re going to use the save. He’s honest and says that with respect (I kinda doubt that) they’re not going to even contemplate it and that this is her swan song. She seems to be okay with this. I’m sure someone will pick her up and sign her.

Kris Allen steps up and prepares to be shot down.  Doing The Way you Look Tonight he sounds good but is far from being modern and relevant, what were the producers thinking? Randy Jackson goes on about how wonderful he was.  Kara says he set the technical standard for the night, which maybe so, but no one is going to buy this other than Kirs Allen fangirls.  Simon Cowell isn’t as enthusiastic as the others.  He says it was nice, but not incredible.  When Simon Cowell says wet remember he means not dry.

Allison Iraheta prepares for the stage, and with any luck will do her thing.  Trying to come off as a crooner will just make her look fake and insincere.  Her opening notes are moving and can be felt.  Thankfully we can still hear Alison Iraheta in her voice.  Randy Jackson say “You come out looking like Britney Murphy, totally dope, and singing like Pink with nine thousand more octaves.  Kara Diogaurdi says this is final material.  Paula Abdul pulls a Paula and goes on and on.  Simon wants more confidence and thinks she is in trouble.

Matt Giraud will pull My Funny Valentine out of his…  I am not impressed and am going to take this moment to get a get a stiff drink.  With Danny Gotke coming up soon, I will make it a double.

Danny Gokey is up and don’t we all wish Alexis Grace.  Singing Come Rain or Come Shine we are preparing for bad karaoke.  I am prepared to drink heavily since i am sure no matter how bad it is all the Jesus Freaks are going to lay praise on him.  Randy Jackson is apparently smoking some dope with his praise.  Kara apparently is puffing on Randy’s pipe too.  Paula is going to swoon.  Simon Cowell is stoned as well.

Adam Lambert is singing Feeling Good which apparently why he is shouting. With the synthesizer tweeting out its little poppping sound I get kind of an ELO feel before we here the big band pounce on it.  The judges are about to go blah blah blah so lets call it a night.  I lied here is a follow up comment.

Paula Abdul says Adam Lambert is like watching Michael Phelps.  Does that mean she feels like she is puffing on a bong?

THE GOOD: Tank (Dane Cook) has a talent for being the ultimate bad boy, so much so that men hire him to take their ex-girlfiends out on dates that are so terrible that when Tank is finished, the ex-girlfriend goes running back in to their ex-boyfriend’s arms. Things go pear-shaped when Tank’s cousin Dustin (Jason Biggs) hires him to take his would-be love Alexis (Kate Hudson) on a lousy date. However, Tank gets more than he bargained for as Alexis is in the mood for ‘experimenting’ and ‘living life’, making it almost impossible for him to succeed. The scenario in this film leads to some funny sequences, least of all being the date Tank has with a conservative religious girl, or the scene where Tank picks up Alexis for the first time and his first bad-boy moment does not work. The cast are quite likeable, leading with Dane Cook and Kate Hudson who do their best with the material. The most enjoyable aspect to the film would have to belong to Alec Baldwin’s supporting role as Tank’s pig of a father Professor Turner who is so self-obsessed and clinically funny in his appraisal and treatment of women that it is very funny to watch in its extremity (his A-Z ranking system is hilarious).

THE BAD: The film falls down in that it is inconsistently plotted and completely implausible. Tank’s character is the worst guy you could come across, which makes the obligatory happy ending where he ends up together with Alexis all the more unbelievable. His behaviour at Alexis’ sister’s wedding is so detestable (complete with propositioning her mother for oral sex), despite it being funny on its own, that one cannot find any sort of justification for how Alexis would in the end decide to be with him. The film also gravitates back and forth between Tank being the bad boy and Tank learning how to be the good guy again which never really comes off as both are executed from such extremely radical positions that he is almost playing two different characters. “My Best Friend’s Girl” would have been better served if it stayed completely in the vulgar and offensive camps rather than trying to toe the line between that and a traditional romantic comedy.

Ally Beaty and Alexis Brown have been friends since their elementary school days.

Now the Lakeside seniors will both be competing for the title of Miss Peanut Festival this weekend in Dothan. Alexis says she can’t think of anyone she’d want to share this occasion with than her schoolmate and friend.

“Who better to go to Peanut with than your best friend?” said Alexis.

The girls departed for Dothan Thursday and will spend the weekend participating in verbal communication and evening gown competitions. The Miss National Peanut Festival pageant will be held at the Dothan Civic Center.

The dream of becoming Miss National Peanut Festival has been in the friends’ sights for a long while. Alexis has longed to compete for the title ever since her little sister competed for Little Miss Peanut Festival. Alexis won the title of Miss Barbour County this spring. She and Ally will compete against 49 other beauties this weekend.

The Present

What I wrote about on Monday really was just a bunch of statistics and information. But the case for having the Academy recognize science fiction and the related genres is the heart and soul of the shows and performances. Just because something is different from what a person perceives as normal doesn’t mean it doesn’t deserve recognition. Too often the science fiction genre has been considered to genre specific to deserve even a nomination. In this section I’m going to list shows and performances that should have at least been nominated if not awarded for the excellence that come from them. I have asked friends for suggestions and have gone to Entertainment Weekly’s list of fifty greatest Emmy snubs to detail performances and shows that deserved and are still deserving of Emmy recognition.

Let’s start out with the show that may have started it all in science fiction, Star Trek. As I previously wrote, both the original series and The Next Generation were nominated for Best Drama Series. And Leonard Nimoy was nominated for his portrayal of First Officer Spock. But there are others that should have been recognized. I was given the suggestion of the Next Gen episodes “Chain of Command”. In this episode Picard is captured and tortured by the Cardassians. It is often sited as one of the best in the Trek canon. Someone else suggested Avery Brooks and Alexander Siddig from Deep Space Nine for the episodes “In the Pale Moonlight”, “Far Beyond the Stars” and “Doctor Bashir I Presume” respectively. This person also suggested “The Siege of AR-558” for a writing nomination.

I personally think that Brent Spiner should have been nominated for his portrayal of Data. His exploration of an android’s exploration of his humanity is a tour de force. Deep Space Nine as a whole was a series deserving of a nomination, especially any of the seasons dealing with the Dominion Wars. I also think that John DeLancie as Q was deserving of a nomination. He appeared mostly in Next Gen but also made appearances in Deep Space Nine and Voyager. I thoroughly enjoyed his performance in “The Q and The Grey”.

I had another commenter also suggest Ben Browder and Claudia Black in Farscape. I’ve only seen the first season of this show but I agree completely. The acting and writing outclass many shows that have won Emmy’s. Perhaps it was the use of puppets that kept the Emmy voters from even considering this show, which is a damn shame.

Let’s move on to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. This show is often brought up as a critic’s favorite and yet the Academy only awarded it in technical categories and the one glitzy nomination it got was for writing. Entertainment Weekly’s Loren Lankford names Sarah Michelle Gellar’s performance as the titular Buffy as one of Emmy’s major snubs. “Buffy blurred the lines of cliques and social circles and played into a fantasy any high schooler would envy,” she says. Alynda Wheat cites the show as another snub. She says “Believe it or not kids, before Lost Emmy didn’t always understand shows with fanciful premises.”

Buffy is not just about monsters and demons, it’s about growing up and facing the trials and tribulations that life throws at you. There are many performances that were deserving of nominations from the Academy. My friend Christina lists a few of these. Anthony Stewart Head as Giles, especially in the episode “Passions”. His grief and joy juxtaposed within a few minutes of each other is heartbreaking. Emma Caufield as Anya in “The Body”, her speech about death and not understanding it…it kills me every time I see it. It expresses so much of what we as humans want to say but can’t because of what is considered normal and polite. Anya as a former demon is lacking the social mores and restraints that humans have. Allison Hannigan as Willow in “Seeing Red” and “Grave”, many say her arc where Willow turns dark is sloppily written and the magic equals addiction metaphor is overplayed, but her performances in both these episodes is powerful and gripping. I would add Nicholas Brendan as Xander in “Grave”. His confrontation with Willow is heartbreaking, powerful and the epitome of who Xander is as a character.

Let’s talk briefly about the other two Joss Whedon projects and the actors involved in those. Glenn Quinn as Doyle on Angel the Series, especially in the episode “Hero”. Everyone knows that poor Glenn had problems with drugs and that he sadly passed away from an overdose. But this doesn’t lessen his superior acting in this episode. He deftly combines Doyle’s cowardice with the heroism that was hidden deep inside. While Joss is well known for killing off beloved characters this particular death is heartbreaking and done with class all thanks to Quinn’s acting.

But for me, the really stand out acting comes from Alexis Denisof as Wesley Wyndam Pryce. His characters entire arc is always brought up as great storytelling and I agree. But much of that hinges on Denisof’s acting. He took a character that was reviled and hated on Buffy and turned him into a dark, brooding hero on Angel. He handled the comedy and the angst with equal skill and I think it is a crime that he was never recognized by the Emmy’s.

While on the subject of comedic performances, I want to give Alan Tudyk as Wash on Firefly a nod. He was the heart and soul of that show. And while, yes, he was mostly used for comedic effect, I want to single out his performance in “War Stories” which is a dramatic turn for his character. It shows a very different side of Wash and I feel that is should have been recognized. Also Summer Glau as River Tam. She infused that role with such passion. It could have been a disaster in different hands, but Summer made us sympathize with poor River.

The one and only nomination creator Joss Whedon received was for his writing of the episode “Hush”. The non-win is often cited as a major snub by the Emmy voters. But there are many other episodes of all his shows that he should have been nominated for. I was given the suggestions of the Buffy episodes “Passions”, “Graduation Day 1 And 2”, “The Body” which was not a monster of the week episode but a look at the all too human reactions to death and dying and the musical episode “Once More With Feeling” for which he wrote both the song lyrics and the actual music. The Angel episodes “Hole in the World”, “Spin the Bottle” (for its comedic effect) and “Smile Time” were all suggested to me. I agree with “Smile Time” because who else but Joss would turn his main character into a puppet? Finally the Firefly episodes “Jayne’s Town” and “The Message” were both suggested. I would add “Out of Gas” because it is a great example of non-linear storytelling.

I see three possible answers here.  This was not her best performance granted, but they have said several times they thought she had what it took to win the competition.  That said not saving her has an air of suspicion that the rumor was true.  She was named as one of the predetermined top four, so did they get rid of her as a sacrificial lamb to cover their asses?  Did they get rid of her only so next week they could say “Guess what, immediately after they show we reconsidered sending her home and thought that was the wrong decision here she is again.”  Idol needs a little drama since as often as not they screw up any sense of anticipation we have in announcing who is going home.  Could it be they were just talking out their asses with all the praise they were showing her.  I am going with one of the first two notions, but not sure which.

In the end, does it matter if the show is rigged, fixed, or manipulate?  The answer is yes and no in my opinion.  First there is a huge legal issue if it is ever determined that the show is fixed.  Too many people send in text messages to vote and that in my book would constitute consumer fraud to the tunes of tens of millions of dollars.  I am sure there are those who would be personally offended and hurt if the show was rigged, but I don’t think any contestant could ever claim to be hurt professionally by a fixed vote.  By the time you hit the American Idol Top 12 you have been seen often enough by enough people to have made a name that will get you into the business if you have what it takes.

For me personally I am not emotionally invested in the show and could care less who wins.  Oh sure I have my favorites and I like to see them do well, but for me the show is about new artists.  A year or three from now when I am listening to the likes of Brooke White, Alexis Grace, and some of the others who got their initial exposure on Idol, I won’t give a damn whether they made it out of Hollywood week or won the damn thing.  What I will care about is if they have a great song.  Sure I will be able to say I remember them when they were on American Idol, and be able to point to a post, but in the end it is the music not the hype that matters to me.  I wish Alexis well and can’t wait to see what sort of album she puts out.  I expect it will be among the first released from this seasons contestants, and probably one of the best.

Anoop Desai is in the house and safe.  Noop Dawg is on the the tour and I have been informed I need to save my money.

Allison Iraheta is in the bottom three and that is a surprise.

Michael Sarver is also in the bottom three.  This is not a surprise.

Scott MacIntyre is on the tour.

Megan joy Corkrey is on the tour too.

Matt G is on the tour.

This leaves us with Kris, Adam and Alexis Grace.

Alexis vs Adam Lambert are against each other.

Randy believe it will be Alexis and he is right.

Bottom three is Alexis Grace, Allison Iraheta, and Michael Sarver.

Allison is told she is safe leaving Alexis Grace going head to head against Michael Sarver.  In my opinion they will save Alexis Grace, but not Michael Sarver.

Simon says they would save one.  I was right go me.

After the vote Michael Sarver is safe, this is a what the fuck moment.  Alexis grace will sing for her life and the save.  She is going home in a true WTF moment.

Michael Sarver starts us off with his forte singing Ain’t Going Down Till The Sun Comes Up.  He knows what he is doing and the sound is great.  Randy Jackson didn’t think it challenged his vocals.  Kara missed the big notes.  Michael replies country music is all about having fun.  Paula recognized the fun he was having.  Simon couldn’t understand the words, and bit clumsy but thinks this is the right sort of music from him.  Michael doesn’t put up with any crap from Simon.  I think he knows how to work the “We Hate Simon Crowd!”

With Blame it on Your Heart, Allison Iraheta pulls off a great vocal performance.  The crowd is worked up and so is Kara.  She thinks Allison could work the alphabet and amaze us.  I am not sure I disagree.  “Rock Solid Performance,” from Paula Abdul.  Simon thought it was good.  Randy Jackson thought it was dope.  As Katy reminded me Dope in Randy speak is good, not that any former toker needs that advice.

Randy Travis calls Kris Allen a solid ballad performance.  Singing Garth Brooks sans guitar.  It is a nice performance but I am not really moved by the song.  He shows his falsetto at the end really well.  Paula Abdul says she is really impressed.  Simon Cowell calls it terrific.  Randy was impressed that he chose to showcase his vocals.  Calls him a tender dawg.  Kara doesn’t know what else to say other than it was really great.

Lil Rounds is after the break…

Lil Rounds wants to honor the country influence rather than her R&B roots.  With Martina McBride’s Independence Day Lil shows how well she can sing.  I hope she is as pleased as I am over this.  Randy thought it was a interesting song choice, he didn’t think she felt as comfortable with it.  She said she took a risk, because she thought it was relevant.  Kara Dioguardi honored the risk and thought that is what makes her an artist.  Paula loved it.  Simon thought she looked uncomfortable.  Lil Rounds says she will take their advice to heart about song choice.

Adam Lambert is going to try Ring of Fire.  With a Middle Eastern slash Indian arrangement I am not sure what to say.  This is certainly a performance I will remember for a very long time.  I am not sure that is a good thing though. If Johny Cash can sing Nine Inch Nails, a NIN wannabe can certainly try a Johny Cash Song.  Kara starts of with “So!”  She doesn’t know what to make of this.  “Strange, but she liked it.”  Paula Abdul thinks he was true to himself as an artist.  Simon Cowell says what Randy was trying to.  “What the hell was that?”  Randy Jackson confirms my NIN reference.

Scot MacIntyre picks Martina McBride.  Randy thinks he will be fine.  Paula thought it was an impressive performance.  She thinks there is a disconnection with the piano.  Simon argues with her and reminds her of all the great artists.  He wants better songs.  Randy Jackson is looking for the stand out vocals.  Kara thinks he brings class and poise to the stage.

Alexis Grace MILF is from the south and admits they all love country.  Singing Jolene she will need to sing better than Brooke White did in Season 7.  Randy thought it had some pitch problems.  Kara thinks she lost her edge.  Paula thinks it was more effective than the others gave her credit for.  Simon thought it was just okay and lacked a little originality, but was still okay.

Danny Gokey aka Danny Gotke is going to try Carrie Underwood and shows off the fact he is a Jesus Freak.  I am going to go get something to eat.

Anoop Desai is going to pull Willie Nelson out of a hat, which is not the second pot reference of the night.  Singing You’re Always On My Mind he definitely shows he has the chops to be here, even if Idol is fixed like the news during the commercial break keeps suggesting.  Paula loved it.  Simon Cowell calls him “Zero to Hero!”  Randy reaffirms Noop Dawg deserves to be here.  Another Randy Dope.  Kara says it is almost untouchable and he owned it.

Megan Joy Corkrey is going to try Patsy Cline.  I Go Walking After Midnight is not a song easily made your own.  As katy says it is different and one I could listen too without feeling horrible.  Randy Jackson was impressed.  Kara says “Perfect Song, Perfect Performance”  Paula says consummate professional for be sick.  Simon says the performance was great and she is beautiful, but wishes the stylist would hold off a little bit.

Matt G is last after the break.  He is going to pull Carrie Underwood too.  Sitting at the piano he sounds good and plays well, but I am not really impressed.  Kara says Amazing.  Paula  called it an honest performance.  Simon Cowell thinks he outsang Danny.   Randy Jackson  says it was his favorite of the night.

At the moment I can say I am not sure who is going home, but whoever is picked I have a feeling the judges will use their pick.  The only person I can see them not saving would be Scott.

Okay Ryan is showing faces of surprise eliminations; Tamyra Grey, Michael Johns, Jennifer Hudson and Chris Daughtry. So they’re introducing the judges’ save. They can only use it once in this season, but the next week two people go.

The contestants seem to be living in the judges mansion, the one that was used when they made the decision about the final 36. Very nice. Brad is admiring Alexis in a bikini.

And now the group sing. Singing the Jackson Five, “I want you back”. Someone is always there to lead Scott around the stage. Glad they seemed to have worked that out. They just featured Danny dancing. He can’t but he does dance with enthusiasm.

During the commercial we get to see whiny emo gay boy’s audition (that would be Nathaniel). He sang “Proud Mary” and sang it well so I see why he made it to the top 36.

Now for the overview of last night’s performance. Now Ryan is asking the contestants about rehearsals and such. Ford video time to Queen’s “We Will Rock You”.

Results time! Michael is up first. He is safe, no surprise there. Allison next, she gets a lot of cheers from the audience. She’s safe. Jasmine. I’m predicting not safe, Ryan brings her to the center of the stage without saying anything.. Matt G. is up. Matt’s safe. Kris next, and now he’s getting Megan to stand up. Kris sits but Megan is down on the stage. Megan is safe and Jasmine is going home. Please don’t use the save judges! Jasmine is going to sing and the judges will reveal their decision afterwards. She’s heading home. Yay! Ryan is very nice and we get her goodbye video. The goodbye song this year is Carrie Underwood covering Motley Crue’s “Home Sweet Home”.

Back from commercial break with Kanye’s performance. He got onto the judges table (but the judges were not sitting there).

Back to the results! Scott is up first and is safe. Alexis now, safe (duh). Danny is safe (another duh). Anooop (my boy!) is sent to the center of the stage. Adam next, safe. Jorge and Lil now, Lil is safe and Jorge is to the center of the stage. But we don’t get to see who goes home until after the break and the Kelly Clarkson performance, of course.

Apparently they’re going to bring back a former Idol every week. This week is the original Idol, Kelly Clarkson. She’s looking very good.

Anoop is safe!!!! Anoooooop! Jorge is going home unless the judges decide otherwise. So he sings while they deliberate. But he’s going home. And we get his goodby video. See you next week!

Lil rounds gets the first introduction and mentions mom crap, but reminds us Memphis has great barbecue.  Let’s see how she sings.  Singing the Way You Make Me Feel Lil Rounds is trying to make the men feel something with a top end that matches the bottom.  All in all her big voice is overshadowed by her big boobs and I am not sure this is her best performance.  Randy Jackson, Kara Dio Guardi and Paula Abdul think it was brilliant.  Simon Cowell tells it like it is and he hates what she is wearing.  He wants five minutes alone with her.

Blind Scott is up next.  Scott Mac Intyre sings Keep the Faith.  He starts off way too soft.  Believe me I have this pumped through a good sound system and I can tell you this isn’t very good.  The girls love him the guys aren’t impressed.

They let Danny Gotkey (aka Danny Gotke) schmooze about something other than his dead wife.  He belts some PYT.  Paula says she thinks Danny is on the way to Paula.  Simon says he is a “White Guy with Soul”  but that the soul didn’t translate to the dancing.  Randy Jackson says he just has it all.

Michael Sarver gets to go on out his family and shows some sensitive side with You are not alone.  As long as I wasn’t on hold or in the elevator too long, I could listen to this song once in a while.  The judges that matter say he had promise.  Paula drones on about him.

Jasmine Murray is going to attempt I’ll Be There.  The song is boring and I am not loving it.  She is currently on my list to go home.  Randy and Kara loved this.  Paula goes on about her youth, but points out some of the flaws.  Simon Cowell says it was a good attempt and that she needs to lighten up and act more her age.

Kris the Arky goes on about the his family life, but my Katy is pleased his wife’s name is also Katy with a Y.  As i have mentioned to her before the further south you go the girls are named for Katy, Texas.  His singing and playing isn’t too bad.  Kara pointed out that the girls love Kris.  Everyone really liked his performance.

Allison Iraheta waxes on about her parents.  She will rock out It Is Given To Me.  I half expected Billie Jean or beat it.  Paula said she looked like a rock star.  Simon says we know who she is.  Randy says she got it.  Kara says she is a rocker all the way and shouldn’t try and change it.

Anoop Desai aka Noop Dog  is going to bring energy to something.  We get Beat It out of Noop Dog.  The guitar riffs are a little much for the band.  Paula hates him.  Simon thought it was horrible.  He says it looked stupid.   Randy also says horrible.  Kara knocks him.  The judges hate him, the people will vote for him to piss off simon.

Jorge Nunez pulls the soulful sounds of the Jackson 5.  Randy Jackson would have chosen a different song.  Kara wasn’t all over the song.  Paula didn’t feel the song was right.  Simon hated the song.  Just like Anoop the judges all badmouth him so he is through.  No matter how the voting go I doubt the producers will really get rid of the two minority guys.

I am loving Megan’s dress and legs.  Lets see how she sings.  She misses her son so much, she better hope she puts out well or she will be back to him,  Singing Rockin Robin is a surprise.  The song actually suits her voice very well.  Kara thinks she put herself into it.  Paula thought it was quirky but not the best choice.  Simon thinks song choice was stupid.
