Over the years, the popularity of online casinos has soared. Instead of dressing up and driving to the nearest casino in your area, you can play the casino game of your choice right in the comfort of your own home.

Why It Pays to Play in an Online Casino Environment

But aside from having the convenience of playing casino in your pajamas at home, what else is the appeal of an online casino environment that allows it to draw such crowds? First of all, no matter which part of the world it is that you are located – you can play casino games as long as your computer has a connection to the Internet.

Second, today’s casinos online offer a plethora of choices when it comes to the games that you can play: Blackjack, Russian Roulette, poker, video poker, slot machines and craps. Third, if you are not yet ready to play with real money, you can use the casinos as a venue to practice your skills. If you’re simply out to have fun, there are Internet casinos which allow you to play with virtual money.

However, if you feel like gambling using real money, you can definitely do so. Just keep in mind that since you will be sharing your personal and financial information – it pays to look for a reputable and highly secure online casino environment if you’re playing the game of your choice with real money.

What to Look for in a Secure Online Casino

To help you out, here is a list of the things that you need to consider when looking for a secure online environment:

1. Check with your poker buddies if there is a particular website that they like to play online casino games at. Word of mouth is still the best reference – and if you don’t want to have any bad experiences with playing online casino, it is a good idea to ask your friends for references first. You might have a pal who’s been playing at a particular casino website which you may not even be aware of, and is raking winnings in the process.

2. Check whether the casino website ranks high on search engines for relevant keywords. A popular website should rank high in the search engines, and this is a good way to check on the reliability and security of the online casino.

3. Read carefully the part of the website which tells online users about the SSL or digital encryption technology that they are using on the website. Don’t even think about using sites which do not use SSL encryption – because this is a security measure taken by website owners to protect the personal information of their online visitors.

4. You can actually play online casino without having to install a software. If you’d rather not install a software, you can definitely choose a web-based casino environment which should also minimize the risks of your personal information being used.

5. Read through the reviews of online casino gaming sites, and read through the fine print of the terms and conditions of using the website. Finally, make sure to read the fine print and browse through online reviews about which casino sites are currently top-ranking.

By following these tips, you are bound to select an ultra-secure casino gaming website that will allow you to enjoy games to the hilt – without compromising your personal and financial information.

Remember that learning How Casino Security Works is important, especially since you will be sharing your financial information over the Internet when making deposits or claiming your wins. As such, it helps to learn more about No Deposit Casinos for First Time Players by browsing through the casino of your choice.

Afghanistan

Did you know- Toward the end of the 1940s, the men’s football team of Afghanistan came in 18th place in the Summer Olympic Games in London, United Kingdom. At the XIV Summer Games, Afghanistan –a country with serious domestic problems– lost 6-0 to Luxembourg. For the first time, soccer players from Afghanistan took part in an Olympic Tournament.

Iraq

Did you know- At the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi (India), the men’s football final was won by Iraq, followed by Kuwait (runner-up). Meanwhile, the bronze medal was shared by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and Saudi Arabia.

Jordan

Did you know- At the 3rd West Asian Games in December 2005, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan took eighth place, ahead of Bahrain, Iraq, and Yemen, in team standings, with 25 medals (3 gold, 11 silver, and 11 bronze).

Kuwait

Did you know- Kuwait’s shooter Fehaid Al Deehani placed third in double trap in the Summer Olympics in Sydney in 2000, behind Richard Faulds (United Kingdom) and Russell Mark (Australia).

Lebanon

Did you know- An eight-member team from Lebanon participated in the Summer Olympics in London, United Kingdom, in 1948. The Arab nation competed in three sports: boxing (1), shooting (2), and wrestling (5). At that time, Lebanon’s Olympic Committee also sent a team of two athletes -skiers- to the Winter Olympics in Saint Moritz, Switzerland.

Qatar

Did you know- Weightlifter Said S. Asaad,a former Bulgarian national, won the bronze medal -the second Olympic medal in the history of Qatari sport– in the men’s 105-kilogram category at the 2000 Olympic Games in the Australian city of Sydney; the country’s first (and only) Olympic medal of the 2000 Games. Before Asaad became a Qatari citizen, he had competed for Bulgaria in many international events.

Syria

Did you know- Despite its anti-American policy, Syria sent a team of seven athletes to Los Angeles (California, US), home to the XXIII Olympic Games. This Arab nation competed in aquatics ( 1), boxing (1), shooting (1), weightlifting (1), and wrestling (3). At the 1984 Los Angeles Games, Syria won its first Olympic medal (a silver in heavyweight freestyle wrestling).

UAE

“Snow Patrol” are a five-piece Irish/Scottish indie/alternative rock band from Dundee. Snow Patrol were formed way back in 1994 and currently the band consists of Gary Lightbody (Vocals and Guitar), Nathan Connolly (Guitar and Backing Vocals), Paul Wilson (Bass), Jonny Quinn (Drums) and Tom Simpson (Keyboards). Snow Patrol were originally known as in indie rock band but have moved to a more alternative rock and power pop sound.

A Hundred Million Suns opens with “If There’s A Rocket Tie Me To It”. It starts off in the distance with the help of synthesizers and gradually sounds louder and gets into the track when the correct momentum hits on. When the guitar comes on, it sounds really good before Gary comes on with his trademark husky yet soft vocals. As Gary sings, the background music carries on and hit a high when Gary goes, “A fire a fire, you can only take what you can carry… A pulse your pulse, it’s the only thing I can remember…” Snow Patrol also gear up the tempo in this part. The remaining 1 minute, If There’s A Rocket Tie Me To It just gets louder and Snow Patrol add some background howls as Gary sings to the end… Great appetizer here…

“Crack The Shutters” begins with delicate piano-playing. Gary’s voice just works so fine with the piano in the verse. In the chorus, the drums just pound on and Gary goes, “Crack the shutters open wide, i want to bathe you in the light of day… And just watch you as the rays, tangle around your face and body…” The guitar also joins in here and the whole track opens to a new tempo and it sounds more lively. It’s not a fast track overall, but it will work on anybody, including you. Believe me.

Once “Take Back The City” starts, the guitar just makes me think that this track could be big. I was instantly connected to Take Back The City. The guitar of Snow Patrol just knows how to blend in so well into this track. With the style they’re playing, Take Back The City should have sounded loud and fierce. But Snow Patrol know what we like about them, and they did it again with this track. They never fail to rock and at the same time, remain as soft and lovely as ever. In the chorus where Gary goes, “It’s a mess, it’s a start, it’s a flawed work of art, your city, your call…”, you would be treated with a repetition of rocking guitar riffs that complement its way to Gary’s vocals. Snow Patrol are having a rocking good time with this track, i can definitely feel it.

“Lifeboats” has some steady guitars going on in the beginning. As the guitar is playing, Gary just comes in and starts singing with his lovely husky voice. No doubt, i like the rhythm of Lifeboats here. Very good stuff! The music just joined by a bass when it comes to certain point that we find Gary goes, “Flashed up in my wildest dreams, like red blood streams, stretch up like vast skies… The veins of you, the veins of me, like gold forest trees… Pushing through and on and in…” Shortly after that, i like the violin-like sound that comes on and off as Gary sings on. If just feels so great listening to it. Lifeboats is one of the tracks that will impress after a few listens. It’s slow and catchy in a way that might give you a wake up call and get you to hit the replay button when the song is nearing the end. And what an ending as well!

“The Golden Floor” has some hand claps going on in the beginning as the guitar plays on in the background. Gary just enters with his vocals not long after The Golden Floor has started. Throughout this track, the hand claps give an impression that they’re replacing the drums even though the drums are being played on this track, but can hardly be heard as the hand claps overwhelmed it by miles. Snow Patrol are very consistent in The Golden Floor, some may find it dull, and some might like it. Still you just have to try The Golden Floor in order to find out.

“Please Just Take These Photos from My Hands” brings the tempo back again. The non-stop guitar strumming seem to be the core element that keeps this song going on as Gary just sings his usual stuffs. In the chorus, the guitar takes on a different riff with high tweak as Gary let it out with, “When all this actual life played out? Where the hell on Earth was I? I rack my brains but it won’t come…” It seems that Snow Patrol already got their trademark guitar sound as i always catch them playing in the same guitar style in almost every fast track. As the song is ending, Gary just sings in repetition, “Please just take these photos from my hands…” One of those tracks that reminds me of “Spitting Games” from the album Final Straw.

“Set Down Your Glass” is a track that brings Snow Patrol from a fast tempo track to a slower tempo track. There are not many instruments being used in Set Down Your Glass, the most obvious sounds are the guitar’s and the vocals of Gary Lightbody. He just possesses the voice of a beautiful ballad and love song singer. I bet Gary would also do incredibly fine if this song were an acapella version. Set Down Your Glass just shows his vocals strength here. Pretty lovely!

“The Planets Bend Between Us” to me is a beautiful love song ballad. And the lyrics itself contain the album title, “A hundred million suns…” Gary makes an impact with his voice here in the vocals, “I will race you to the waterside, and from the edge of Ireland shout out loud, so they could hear it in America, it’s all for you…” The part where Gary sings, “It’s all for you…” is the best part of all. I just love the way Gary extend his vocals on the word, “You…” Beautiful and love ballad over here, shows Snow Patrol are capable of writing such meaningful and thought-provoking song that manages to capture every person’s heart. This song will melt you, pamper you and the best of all, touch you.

“Engines” has some howls going on in the beginning before joined by high-pitching guitar riff. After each phrase of singing by Gary, the high pitch guitar riff can be heard in a way that’s almost similar to a dessert after a sumptuous main course. In the chorus, a second guitar can be heard and it possesses fairy tale-like element as it plays on in the chorus along side with Gary’s vocals. One more thing that’s worth mentioning is the cleverly written lyrics, “You say you love me like the silence of the turning earth, you say you love me like the endless roar of modern of life, you say you love me like the laughter and the kissed back tears, you say you love me like the past the now the coming years…” No other word can describe this lyrics except beautiful, unless you can find a better word.

“Disaster Button” has a fast-paced little guitar in the opening. It sounds like it’s getting up the stairs in small steps. Gary just sings as if he were speaking. When it reaches the right momentum, the whole track seems to be taking off in a loud and fast mode and still, Gary just sings on without using much strength, “Throw forward to later, you look light on your feet, when you whirled in the room, i was nailed to my seat…” The guitars of Snow Patrol seems to be enjoying their part by playing it loud most of the time on Disaster Button. Instead of Disaster Button, this song should be called “Explosion Button” due to its loudness and energy in this track.

“The Lightning Strike” ends A Hundred Million Suns with a track that contains three different tracks and it’s over 16 minutes long all together. First track is called “What If This Storm Ends?”. It starts with some steady piano playing for a while before Gary enters with this vocals. As he sings, the music seems to get enriched with instruments like horn and trombone. It doesn’t really have a chorus, just a line of words where Gary sings through. Not a bad first track of a three-track song. Entering the second track, it’s called “Sunlight Through the Flags”. As it continues from “What If This Storm Ends?”, it has a faster-paced piano in the beginning. The deal here is when it comes to a point where the guitar just comes in with a slow looping guitar riff in the background as Gary goes, “Worry not everything is sound, this is the safest place you’ve found, the only noise beating out is ours, lacing our tea from honey jars…” In the end, this track just ends with the piano it first played in the beginning. Come to the third track of “The Lightning Strike”, “Daybreak” leverages on synthesizers for its opening. As Gary enters the verse here, each phrase of the verse is sung with an extending and pulling vocals.

The music suddenly takes a different turn with the bass coming in with a more obvious sound after the first verse. As it gets further into this track, Snow Patrol just focus more on the music and the most obvious sound is the guitar where again it can be heard playing in a way that Snow Patrol are always known for. A very ambitious ending by Snow Patrol!

It’s really such a pleasant surprise when you realise that an artist that you cherish and admire is also very popular in the general community. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I read that India Arie has been nominated for no fewer than 17 Grammy’s, having won two. Furthermore, her albums have all been extremely popular, garnering multi-platinum status. Really, how fantastic, because there can be no modern soul star who deserves this success more.

India Arie’s new album, Testimony Vol.2, Love & Politics, the follow-up to her 2006 outing Testimony Vol1, Life & Relationships, is a true stunner and has come at a time when I was craving some Arie. It varies from gorgeous slow-jam’s such as Pearls featuring Dobet Gnahore, and the great up-beat sound found on Therapy featuring Gramps Morgan.

Arie’s greatness stems from her ability to move seamlessly between honey-soaked love ballads, and really hard-hitting political pieces. One of these songs is Ghetto, where Arie draws strong comparisons between the ghettos of America and of Africa. Better Way featuring blues legend Keb Mo has the best Soul and Blues fused beat I’ve heard, and the way in which Arie’s voice interplays with Mo’s guitar is pure magic.

Also featuring the very talented Musiq Soulchild, MC Lyte and Terrell Carter, this album is a true modern soul masterpiece. It’s fun, exiting, challenging, engaging, and most of all, it lives up to the fact that this artist is at the top of her game, no matter whether the Grammy’s want to take notice or not!

Available through Universal Republic Music

BOTTOM LINE: Long winded and meandering while simultaneously melding dark dramatic sequences with stupid looking costumed superheroes, “Watchmen” is a mixed bag of strong themes, incredible visuals, overall mediocrity and silliness.

THE GOOD: Hollywood is on the comic book/graphic novel bandwagon, turning to a vast array of published material for new films. Much like The Spirit which came out last year, “Watchmen” occupies an uncomfortable ground between maintaining the tone of the source material and creating great cinematic entertainment. Director Zack Snyder has certainly created a feast for the visual senses, forging an alternate reality on screen where President Richard Nixon continued to serve in to the 80s after being aided by a band of superheroes to win the Vietnam War. The enigmatic and god-like Dr Manhattan (Billy Crudup) is capable of bending matter and energy to his will, serving America but becoming increasingly detached from the human race as his vast knowledge and power grows.

The other superheroes are a mixed range of good natured souls such as Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson) and Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) to the darker vigilante Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley) and the immoral Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). The concepts in the film are certainly fascinating, least of which being an alternate take on history with America and Russia now on the brink of nuclear war in the 80s and the Watchmen who can potentially stop it all from happening. Cold war motifs run rampant, as do themes of annihilation and human endurance in the face of such catastrophe. The superheroes are not themselves immune from the darkness, with the smartest of them all, Ozymandias (Matthew Goode) hatching a plan which may save the world but destroy the Watchmen in the process. The second half of the film is where all of this comes to a head and makes for some more intelligent viewing than what you might expect from a film like this. “Watchmen” is a unique in its creation of an alternate reality with its original visual and storytelling sensibilities.

THE BAD: Although it is not nearly as bad, “Watchmen” has much in common with last year’s The Spirit in that the conventions of the graphic novel do not seem to translate as well in to the realm of cinema. The first half of the film jumbles together a myriad of storylines to introduce all the characters, and they all appear to have different tones and styles which do not adequately advance the storyline that well. The dark, internal monologue style of the Rorschach storyline that in many ways embodies a “Sin City” style tone does not meld comfortably with the almost silly 60s comic book like quality of the Nite Owl and Silk Spectre characters. The Dr Manhattan storyline appears to spring right out of a 50s B-movie sci-fi film, and the immoral antics of the Comedian seem to negate the whole reason why these guys are heroes in the first place. Ironically, the Richard Nixon character seems the most comic book of them all with his over the top nose extension to accentuate his iconic facial outline. Zack Snyder has not really given us a way in to these characters given the first hour is so long and meandering. The second half of the film becomes more interesting, but by the end of the two hour and forty minute run time, you are left wondering whether or not forty minutes could have been cut out of the film to give it more focus.

Steven Spielberg brings us his take on WAR OF THE WORLDS with impressive results. It has a few of the cringeworthy Spielberg moments but for the most part this is a superior alien invasion film. Continue reading →

For any of you who were waiting for an updated, big budget, serious Hollywood alien invasion flick to come along, especially after being immensely disappointed with the sludge that was “Independence Day”, you’ll be gratified with “War of the Worlds”, the retelling of the HG Wells classic. Director Steven Spielberg, notable for giving us more warm and fuzzy aliens in his films decides to go in the opposite direction, not just for himself, but with the aforementioned “Independence Day” by doing almost the exact opposite of what that film accomplished (or destroyed, depending on your point of view). The aliens are menacing, the scenes of destruction are actually terrifying, the characters are more deeply grounded in reality, and despite the storybook quality to the opening and closing scenes, this film delivers a solid story with compelling, realistic sequences that will amaze and terrify you.

The opening sequence where the tripods literally explode out of the ground and then start zapping everyone is one of the most terrifying sequences put to screen. Perhaps the idea that they were in the ground for a million years and none of us noticed stretches credibility a little but it doesn’t really matter as it’s so magnificently staged that you’ll forget that point. Spielberg deliberately draws on the post 9/11 experience, showing a scene of destruction not too dissimiliar from the scenes of people fleeing from the rubble of the twin towers collapsing in New York after the terrorist attack. Another sequence later in the film where an alien tripod comes up out of the water destroying a ferry is quite thrilling and pounds home the constant threat that humans are out to be exterminated and there’s no escape. And in perhaps one of the darkest scenes in a Spielberg film, we see someone get pinned to the ground by one of the tripods and have the blood sucked out of him.

One of the interesting themes running through this film is the idea that humans will actually turn on themselves in order to survive. It’s decidedly pessimistic for a film like this, but also very realistic. A sequence where people are fighting over a car, with Tom Cruise and his family almost getting shot to keep the car, is disturbing. After they escape, we see the man who took the car get shot himself by the mob swamping the car. It’s this kind of selfish craziness that can define the worst characteristics in humans.

The film is also concerned with the idea of a refugee situation occurring in a big Western society like America. There is definite attempt by Spielberg to showcase this, specifically in many scenes where we see homeless and disparate people walking across the landscape to flee the terror brought upon them.

It was a bold move of Spielberg to set a third of the film inside a man’s basement but it actually provides a study in human reactions to a crisis of survival. Enter Tim Robbins who gives a harrowing performance as a man who is biding his time before he fights back against the invaders. There is an insane implausibility behind his thinking which comes to a head in a scene where Cruise has to deal with him in a morally questionable manner, but which leads to the survival of him and his family.

Tom Cruise and co. do an amicable job as the film’s leads but overall, this isn’t really a film where you’re concentrating on the actors. They just have to convey fear and their reactions to the extraordinary things that are happening to them.

The only negative on this film is the opening and closing scenes. Although they are meant to tie in with the earlier George Pal film and are amply narrated by Morgan Freeman, they give the impression of a storybook which seems completely out of whack with the rest of the film. It also adds that Spielberg-touch of sentimentality which despite its very small dose just seems inappropriate.

Some may be put off by the anti-climactic ending but it’s an ending it shares with the original novel and the original George Pal version of the film. It actually makes a whole lot of sense that nature would end up killing the aliens because we really wouldn’t have the resources to do it ourselves.

This is a great film that finally delivers a serious alien invasion story.

Armed Forces Day occurs each and every year on the third Saturday of May (Tomorrow, May 15th this year). This national day of honor was created to salute the loyalty and hard work of American troops in every branch of the military – Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Coast Guard. Up until 1949, each branch of the armed forces had their own day of celebration. Unifying these days of tribute into one event, Armed Forces Day was proclaimed to be a national day by President Harry Truman on February 20, 1950.

Fighting for our personal freedoms, members of the United States Armed Forces train hard, work hard and often place themselves in grave danger for the benefit of the greater good. America’s military is one of the largest around in terms of manpower, second only to China, with nearly 1, 473,900 active personnel and 1,458,500 reserve personnel. For most of the history of the armed forces, employment has been voluntary although “drafts” have been implemented in various times of war and peace. The US military is a leading force of might and strength around the world with large amounts of high-tech, powerful equipment to provide marked capabilities in defense and creating an image of power.

Wearing military uniforms is a mandatory requirement to being part of the proverbial team; the styles of uniforms vary from branch to branch and have evolved markedly over time. While official rank and number are required to wear a real military uniform, there are many options in navy, marine, air force and army costumes for even the most ardent of military fans. Wearers of military costumes will command lots of attention dressed up in the replica gear and garments of their idolized men and women in uniform. Some military costumes look realistic down to the last brass button while others are strictly for fun, like the super sexy women’s costumes from the various armed force branches.

Rightfully portrayed as heroes, it’s no wonder that fictional military characters abound in popular culture. From the blazing guns and muscles of big screen, little screen and comic book GI Joe to the Air Force Academy “Top Gun” played by actor Tom Cruise, there are many popular pretend armed forces costumes and costume ideas to choose from. Of course, every army costume, navy costume, marine costume, and air force costume needs costume accessories such as pretend grenades, aviator glasses, army boots, toy machine guns and more!
