Road to London 2012!

Afghanistan

Did you know- Toward the end of the 1940s, the men’s football team of Afghanistan came in 18th place in the Summer Olympic Games in London, United Kingdom. At the XIV Summer Games, Afghanistan –a country with serious domestic problems– lost 6-0 to Luxembourg. For the first time, soccer players from Afghanistan took part in an Olympic Tournament.

Iraq

Did you know- At the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi (India), the men’s football final was won by Iraq, followed by Kuwait (runner-up). Meanwhile, the bronze medal was shared by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and Saudi Arabia.

Jordan

Did you know- At the 3rd West Asian Games in December 2005, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan took eighth place, ahead of Bahrain, Iraq, and Yemen, in team standings, with 25 medals (3 gold, 11 silver, and 11 bronze).

Kuwait

Did you know- Kuwait’s shooter Fehaid Al Deehani placed third in double trap in the Summer Olympics in Sydney in 2000, behind Richard Faulds (United Kingdom) and Russell Mark (Australia).

Lebanon

Did you know- An eight-member team from Lebanon participated in the Summer Olympics in London, United Kingdom, in 1948. The Arab nation competed in three sports: boxing (1), shooting (2), and wrestling (5). At that time, Lebanon’s Olympic Committee also sent a team of two athletes -skiers- to the Winter Olympics in Saint Moritz, Switzerland.

Qatar

Did you know- Weightlifter Said S. Asaad,a former Bulgarian national, won the bronze medal -the second Olympic medal in the history of Qatari sport– in the men’s 105-kilogram category at the 2000 Olympic Games in the Australian city of Sydney; the country’s first (and only) Olympic medal of the 2000 Games. Before Asaad became a Qatari citizen, he had competed for Bulgaria in many international events.

Syria

Did you know- Despite its anti-American policy, Syria sent a team of seven athletes to Los Angeles (California, US), home to the XXIII Olympic Games. This Arab nation competed in aquatics ( 1), boxing (1), shooting (1), weightlifting (1), and wrestling (3). At the 1984 Los Angeles Games, Syria won its first Olympic medal (a silver in heavyweight freestyle wrestling).

UAE

Did you know- The United Arab Emirates had a new idol to cheer in August 2004 when Sheikh Ahmed Bin Hasher Al Maktoum won the gold medal in the men’s double trap shooting event in the Olympic Games in Greece, equalling the Olympic record of 189 points, which was established by Australia’s shooter Russell Mark at the 26th Olympiad in the United States in the mid-1990s.

When Japanese author Tite Kubo created the popular manga Bleach, he would never have imagined the immense popularity the comic would receive. Bleach is the story of a 15 year old teenager named Ichigo Kurosaki who soon finds himself as a soul reaper, someone who fight evil spirits known as hollows. For many popular anime cartoons, the first season can be a little slow and dull, as they have to introduce the characters and story. However, with Bleach, the show starts off with a bang and continues to entertain all through the first season.

In the first three episodes of the popular anime, we are introduced to Ichigo Kurosaki, his crazy dad, and his two sisters. Ichigo one days sees a hollow attacking a young girl and attempts to save it. During this a woman starts to fight the hollow and attempts to destroy it. We later find out the girl is named Rukia and is a soul reaper. After the fight a hollow comes to Ichigo’s house and during the fight Rukia is injured, however, Ichigo gains her powers and is successful in subduing the monster.

Later in the series, we are introduced to more characters such as Orihime, a slow but beautiful red headed girl who is very sensitive to spirits in the other world. Also, the show introduces Chad, a tough guy who also can sense evil spirits.

By the end of the first season of Bleach, the show has covered a lot of ground, but is still packed with action. The fights in the show really take off around episode eighteen and Ichigo’s weapon soon becomes even more powerful. Bleach is highly recommended and the first season while great, is just the beginning of the adventure.

And I thought that Anurag Kashyap had really excelled himself in Dev D, especially since messing with a proven classic can be a tricky proposition. He succeeded and eminently so! Barely had I recovered from that awesome movie that AK has unleashed another explosion of emotions with a relentless assault on our sensibilities. Set amidst the feudal ethos of Rajasthan the story is about the pursuit of ambition, accumulation of power, innocent & betrayed love. In true Shakespearean milieu there are plots and sub plots and yet some more hidden beneath them but each interconnected to finally merge in the inevitable climax so much like a Greek tragedy.

Barring Kay Kay Menon nearly everybody is a fresh face. The main lead Raja Singh Chaudhary is also the author of the story revolving around student politics which was rewritten by Anurag Kashyap and Aparna Chaturvedi after incorporating rebellious regional aspirations sequential to the perceived injustices by the state. So very contemporary and yet so well portrayed! Kay Kay is the parochial manipulator who uses the students’ politics to build a cadre for pursuing his secessionist agenda. Abhinayu Pratap Singh is the reclusive & reckless prince trying to hide from the riches of his father. Aditya Srivastava & Ayesha Mohan are the prince’s half blood Machiavellian siblings whose yearning for legitimacy drives them to deception and murder. Deepak Dobriyal is Kay Kay’s main hit man and Man Friday. Mahie Gill as Kay Kay’s mistress impresses once again with her vivaciousness & natural acting ability. Jesse Randhawa’s walk from the ramp to the screen shows a lot of promise.

I have to dedicate a separate paragraph to Piyush Mishra. The man has till now played bit roles in sundry movies and penned the script for Black Friday but in this pic he writes, he composes the music, sings and acts too. This will easily be one of the performances of the year if not the decade. First the music! Don’t gloss over the songs. Hear them; hear the lyrics and you will be bowled over. While “Arambh hai prachand” sounds the battle cry, his rendition of “Duniya” which is a take on Pyaasa’s classic “Yeh Duniya Agar Mil Bhi Jaye To Kya hai” manages to retain its integrity and freshness. The mujra song “Rana ji” has to be one of the most original I have heard in a long time. Using traditional language and style, the lyrics go global without a warning. So with the sexy thumka of Mahie Gill you are suddenly presented with an in your face commentary on 9/11 (Jaise door desh ke tower main ghus jaye re aeroplane), Iraq, Afghanistan, democracy and the cola wars. Whacky imagination at its best! Another beautiful composition is “Sheher” sung along with the talented Swanand Kirkire (Remember Khoya Khoya Chand). Mishra plays the role of the schizophrenic musician elder brother of Kay Kay. He idolizes John Lennon, composes on the spot poetry and has an opinion on everything. The pathos on his face after he loses his dancing consort is heart breaking.

I feel Anurag Kashyap is not an ordinary movie maker. His movies are like a painting canvas where he tries to marry various art forms. If the music resounds of folk songs and fine poetry the shots of the practicing Ram Leela characters impart a theatre like color. If one song reminds you of the wandering minstrels the other carries the guitar strums of western country music. He is also a die hard romantic. Look for John Lennon’s sketch peeking out from the mad poet’s medallion and posters of Che Guevara and Jimmy Hendrix set in a neon lit bar masquerading as a residence in the middle of the desert. For me this is better than any art/parallel cinema.

There are four or five CDs in my car that stay loaded in my 8-disc changer. The other 3 slots stay open for new arrivals. Most of the time Sara Groves occupies two of those previous slots. My heart has been grateful since the day my wife introduced me to Groves’ music a few years ago.

I have many vices, one of which lends itself to missing a lot of good art. It manifests itself as boredom with music. In reality, it is an arrogant pride that longs for others to think I am too spiritually cultured for cheap art. It’s ugly… I know. There, I feel liberated already.

With that said, I will say what stirs my soul is an artful weaving of lyrical poetry and well-crafted music. Listening is mostly a cerebral experience for me. I envy those who can get lost in rhythm and harmony. Being a trained musician is surely a blessing and a curse, mostly a curse when there is little natural affinity toward harmony and rhythm.

Previous albums will introduce you to her skill and thoughtfulness, but “Add to the Beauty” will likely re-awaken your heart. The songs she compiled arise out of her passion to create and share the love of God by adding value to those you encounter daily. Every human has beauty to contribute to our shared experience here on this big blue ball of rock. “Add to the Beauty” will motivate you to discover and live into your contribution. These simple acts of love may influence one person or may leave a lasting legacy for a multitude, but their value is not measured by breadth, but by the depth of difference you make.

I have listened to this album countless times, and I still shed tears as I’m driving down the road. So if you see me balling like a baby next time you pass, don’t worry, I am OK. If I could only hang onto 10 CDs, this one would most definitely make the cut.

Movie Mama Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
Recommended For: Elementary school age and above

Starring: Helen Mirren, Brendan Fraser, Paul Bettany, Jim Broadbent, Andy Serkis
Directed By: Iain Softley
Running Time: 1 hr. 43 min.
MPAA Rating: PG for fantasy adventure action, some scary moments and brief language.
Genre: Adventure/Family/Fantasy

Mo Folchart (Brendan Fraser) was born with a special power: anything he reads aloud comes to life. He did not know of his gift until he read the book Inkheart to his young daughter, Meggie (Eliza Hope Bennett). Several characters from the book appeared before him: the evil villain Capricorn (Andy Serkis), a few of his thugs, and a fire-juggler named Dustfinger (Paul Bettany). And as if the characters leaping off the page and threatening Mo with his life weren’t bad enough, his wife Resa (Sienna Guillory) was tragically transported into the book. When the book is destroyed, Mo spends his entire life traveling with Meggie all over the world in search for another copy of Inkheart so he may bring his wife back to the real world.

Inkheart, in essence, is a fantasy tale about a fantasy tale. The idea of reading stories to life is an intriguing one. With all the wonderful books and characters in literary history, Inkheart had the potential to be an intimidatingly great, masterfully woven film. But the author and director took the easy route, handing the audience a mediocre story with an messy ending of underutilized characters.

While Inkheart is an acceptable family flick, true movie lovers are going to feel cheated and confused. For example, Meggie has an English accent, even though we’re led to believe that she has never settled down anywhere, and her father has an American accent. Maybe I’m a bit too picky about accents, but when a director has the ability to create a world for us to step into, the most simple elements should click. Eliza Hope Bennett is a terrific Meggie, and her accent is lovely, but it was distractingly out of place.

Helen Mirren plays Meggie’s rude Aunt Elinor who lives a life of solitude, escaping into novels instead of setting foot in the real world. Her character is an interesting one, especially when she gives up her solitude to help Mo and Meggie, but Helen Mirren’s performance is nothing above community stage acting. I was thoroughly irritated with her by the end. As for Brendan Fraser, he brings nothing new to the movie screen since his most recent film, Journey to the Center of the Earth.

PROS
Even though Inkheart’s author creates Dustfinger as a cowardly and selfish character, he learns that he can choose to be different, that our actions and choices change who we are, and that we are not preconceived notions of ourselves.

Dustfinger redeems himself in the end, becoming a selfless person. However, this is only depicted by him committing one solitary selfless act. In my opinion, this isn’t enough to convince me that he has changed, but one selfless act is better than none.

Mo is consistently protecting Meggie, much to her chagrin. But he’s a wonderful father figure, risking his life for hers several times. He is also committed to restoring his family, searching for years to find his lost wife and reunite with her.

CONS
Dustfinger’s pet ferret fetches keys from an old hag’s wrinkly cleavage. I thought this was distasteful and uncalled for. The villains are comical and not truly scary, however they do wield knives and one of them cuts Mo’s arm in a flashback. The shadow creature at the end may be too much for little ones. There is a violent tornado scene where men are swept up into the cyclone, as well as very mild language.

OVERALL
Inkheart is a mildly entertaining family flick, but nothing more.

People can be found on Twitter to follow using “find people”, if their name or account is known by the potential follower or if they allow their email as a search reference. Another way to find people is if they put in a Twitter profile which includes a title to look for, such as “coach” or “author”. However, these methods will only help find a few people since many more may appear that do not really meet the user’s desired requirements. A more targeted approach to finding people to follow (following) and who might follow back (followers) is necessary to insure getting the best information from experts or the right potential audience.

Twitter is such a popular communication tool that many directories have been created around it that may be used to make following the desired people easier. Many of these directories are free or have a small fee for professional use. Some also provide space for Twitter users to say more about themselves than is allowed on the 160 character Twitter profile, thus making it easier for others to find out more and decide to become followers of a particular account. Below are ten of popular directories currently available for easily finding people on Twitter by a keyword category or the user’s location.

Category directories:

1. Twellow (twellow.com) – Known as the Twitter yellow pages since it updates with new accounts added to Twitter

2. My Twitter Directory (mytwitterdirectory.com) similar to Twellow, except Twitter accounts must sign-up to be seen here.

3. Tweet Find (tweetfind.com) – Directory of users by category who sign-up to be listed.

4. We Follow (wefollow.com) – Similar to Tweet Find but with more category tags.

5. Twit Who (twitwho.net) – Works similar to Tweet Find.

6. TwitR (twitr.org) – Similar to Twit Who but with lots more tags at the top level instead of sub-categories.

7. Mr. Tweet (mrtweet.com) – Directory is by community of users rather than by category but it can be used the same way. Once user is following others on Twitter, signing up with this tool can provide a daily intelligence report of new people to potentially follow.

Location directories:

8. TwellowHood (twellow.com/twellowhood) – This is another tab on Twellow that allows geographical searching for users from a map.

9. Geo Follow (geofollow.com) – Text-based search by country, state, or city of Twitter users who sign-up to be on directory.

10. Local Tweeps (localtweeps.com) – Allows search for Twitter users who sign-up to be on directory by zip code.

Using the best directory to meet business and social networking needs from these ten along with the popular communication tool of Twitter should help make following the people desired a little easier. Review several directories and then consider which directory gives the most efficient targeting approach to finding the right people to follow and who may follow back in order to get the best information desired or to find the correct audience for tweets.
