Charlie Wilson is a Covert Winner – A Review of “Charlie Wilson’s War”

There’s something quite remarkable about “Charlie Wilson’s War”; it manages to portray an unknown political story from the 1980′s about the biggest covert war in history that brought down the Soviet Empire not only with insight and intelligence, but with humour, wit and fun. This film is a triumph from start to finish, telling a great story and providing an insight in to history of which most of us would not have been aware. Continue reading

THE GOOD: From the outset it appears that “Burn After Reading”, the Coen Brothers follow up to the Oscar-winning “No Country For Old Men”, is going to be an off-the-wall satire of the intelligence industry in the United States, and the setup gives the indication that the film will do a decent job of it with CIA Analyst Osbourne Cox (John Malkovich) unceremoniously dumped from the Agency in the first scene and his explosive response. Mission Impossible Movie Review

I was quite familiar with the general set up of Mission: Impossible the television show, having watched numerous episodes and enjoyed them thoroughly. When a feature film version was announced with Tom Cruise set to star, it seemed reasonable, although I couldn’t help but wonder how it was going to be changed to suit Cruise. It was also a surprise to learn that Brian De Palma was directing; having made such classics as Scarface and The Untouchables, this seemed a strange shift in direction as the material didn’t on the surface seem to fit with him. These concerns ultimately proved to be unwarranted as this film is one of the most thrilling spy films you’re likely to see. Continue reading

Steven Spielberg’s Catch Me if You Can – Movie Review

Real-life con man Frank Abagnale was able to impersonate many roles (doctor, lawyer, airline pilot etc) as well as make perfect counterfeit money to fund his extravagant lifestyle all before the age of 21. Steven Spielberg’s film version of his con-man life is a light, breezy piece of entertainment that will keep you enthralled as you watch Abagnale (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) get away with so many things that most of us wouldn’t even dream of getting away with. Continue reading
