Road to London 2012!

Afghanistan

Did you know- Toward the end of the 1940s, the men’s football team of Afghanistan came in 18th place in the Summer Olympic Games in London, United Kingdom. At the XIV Summer Games, Afghanistan –a country with serious domestic problems– lost 6-0 to Luxembourg. For the first time, soccer players from Afghanistan took part in an Olympic Tournament.

Iraq

Did you know- At the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi (India), the men’s football final was won by Iraq, followed by Kuwait (runner-up). Meanwhile, the bronze medal was shared by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and Saudi Arabia.

Jordan

Did you know- At the 3rd West Asian Games in December 2005, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan took eighth place, ahead of Bahrain, Iraq, and Yemen, in team standings, with 25 medals (3 gold, 11 silver, and 11 bronze).

Kuwait

Did you know- Kuwait’s shooter Fehaid Al Deehani placed third in double trap in the Summer Olympics in Sydney in 2000, behind Richard Faulds (United Kingdom) and Russell Mark (Australia).

Lebanon

Did you know- An eight-member team from Lebanon participated in the Summer Olympics in London, United Kingdom, in 1948. The Arab nation competed in three sports: boxing (1), shooting (2), and wrestling (5). At that time, Lebanon’s Olympic Committee also sent a team of two athletes -skiers- to the Winter Olympics in Saint Moritz, Switzerland.

Qatar

Did you know- Weightlifter Said S. Asaad,a former Bulgarian national, won the bronze medal -the second Olympic medal in the history of Qatari sport– in the men’s 105-kilogram category at the 2000 Olympic Games in the Australian city of Sydney; the country’s first (and only) Olympic medal of the 2000 Games. Before Asaad became a Qatari citizen, he had competed for Bulgaria in many international events.

Syria

Did you know- Despite its anti-American policy, Syria sent a team of seven athletes to Los Angeles (California, US), home to the XXIII Olympic Games. This Arab nation competed in aquatics ( 1), boxing (1), shooting (1), weightlifting (1), and wrestling (3). At the 1984 Los Angeles Games, Syria won its first Olympic medal (a silver in heavyweight freestyle wrestling).

UAE

Did you know- The United Arab Emirates had a new idol to cheer in August 2004 when Sheikh Ahmed Bin Hasher Al Maktoum won the gold medal in the men’s double trap shooting event in the Olympic Games in Greece, equalling the Olympic record of 189 points, which was established by Australia’s shooter Russell Mark at the 26th Olympiad in the United States in the mid-1990s.

Review of one of the most important poker clients on the internet. Learn why PKR offers the most sensational game play. Continue reading →

PKR does not Allow Players from the U.S.A to Play Real Money due to Their Gambling Laws

PKR offers, without a doubt, the most sensational game play in online poker.

“It rocks!” – FHM

In terms of software, PKR has no rivals as they have managed to create an almost true to life experience with amazing 3d graphics and the ability to let your avatar act out desired actions such as flirting, booing, crying and even executing a few chip tricks using the Emote Control System. In addition, five different moods can be set giving characters even more personality during play.

What makes this online poker room even more realistic is the opportunity to fully customize your avatar under every possible aspect including the accent of your voice, giving you the possibility to almost bring yourself to the table or, if you prefer, to create a totally different character from yourself. Furthermore, the pace of the game is slow exactly as in real life. This also means that there are less “grinders,” or people who are playing at a number of different tables simultaneously.

A great deal of attention in developing the software has also been given to the very detailed different settings one can choose to play in, which makes it really hard for you to get bored playing PKR!

PKR has been quoted as “Texas Hold’em meets ‘The Sims’…” – WPT Pokerbecause it really does feel like a crossover between poker and a computer video game. No other poker client available today offers such features for real money.

What’s more, the folks at PKR have managed to make the minimum system requirements “affordable” for any machine that was approximately built in the last 4-5 years. To run PKR you need 512 RAM, 1 Ghz Pentium or equivalent, 32 Mb graphics card with DirectX 9.0c and around 45 Mb of Hard Drive space.

Trafficwise the site is ranked 14th overall meaning that whether its ring games or tournaments, there will always be enough people to play with. Also keep in mind that the traffic volume is constantly growing.

Other than Texas Hold’em, PKR offers Omaha and Omaha Hi/Lo.

PKR attracts mainly recreational players because of its unique features and 3d game play, which like I said before, makes the pace of the game slower thus discouraging “grinders”. However, don’t be fooled by this since you very well might be at the table sitting next to a very skilled player!

PKR has introduced a beginner program that includes a free roll for beginners who deposit for the first time and a cash table locked for beginners only so they don’t lose money to “sharks”.

After long anticipation and periods of excitement from the fans, the Hannah Montana movie was finally released today in all theatres across USA and Canada! UK, Europe and the rest of the world releases are to come either later this month or next month at the latest.

Myself, together with other parents who bought tickets in advance for the second screening of the day at 12:30 walked straight to the ticket controllers and on the way to the screen number 1! The Hannah Montana movie stars Miley Cyrus as Miley Stewart (last name presumably changed so the young audience don’t mistake her life in the movie with her real life – and same with Miley’s father Billy Ray; name changed from Billy Ray Cyrus to Billy Ray Stewart in the Hannah Montana movie). There is also the rest of the cast from the original tv series on the Disney Channel that is currently in season 3. No one knows whether there will be a season 4 but Miley Cyrus did say that she would like to carry on starring in her debut series!

In this Hannah Montana movie, Miley Stewart (Miley Cyrus) is just an average school girl, by day and an awesome blonde wigged rock star by night, performing in the coolest concerts across the country. Billy Ray Stewart (Billy Ray Cyrus) is her manager by night and doesn’t do a very good job at hiding his actual relationship with Hannah Montana. With the press on their shoulder to find out the true identity of Hannah, this makes little sense – typical of Disney.

The other celebrity that actually appears as herself is Tyra Banks. From the point Miley and Tyra get into a public shoe fight in a store, and she unwillingly ruins Lili’s (Emily Osment) 16th birthday party, the attitude of the Hannah Montana film changes.

Billy Ray Stewart decides that it’s time for Miley Cyrus to take a look at the simple country life back to Tennessee where she was born. One bit of trivia is that Taylor Swift who appears on the movie’s soundtrack actually lives in Tennessee not far from where the Hannah Montana movie was filmed!

As you can see in the Hannah Montana movie trailer most of the action happens in this magical place where everything is so different from the big city! Miley has more time for herself and can give up the blonde wig (for now at least) but it still doesn’t save her from getting into trouble or doing silly things!

In conclusion, if you are a Hannah Montana fan or if your kids are fans, then this movie is definitely worth seeing in cinema and perhaps buying a DVD when it comes out. The Hannah Montana movie was not made in a way that would easily permit a real sequel that can make sense so perhaps this is the first and last movie for all fans!

Tim Howard has been a fan of the popular Disney TV show Hannah Montana; you can find more in-depth details on this lawsuit, as well as other fan news at his fansite: http://www.HannahMontanaZone.com

BOTTOM LINE: Clever, witty, fun and looking glorious in 3-D, “Monsters Vs Aliens” is a solid CG-animated flick which both kids and adults should enjoy, even though it lacks a knockout punch.

THE GOOD: Nine times out of ten, a CG-animated movie is more often than not great and one can only speculate that the reason for this stems from the fact that so many years of time and effort are spent making them. Pixar is the studio that makes the AA-grade CG films, but Dreamworks Animation is close behind and with “Monsters Vs Aliens”, the company has shown its ability to deliver a good quality film, even though it is not quite up to Pixar’s lofty standards. As the title would suggest, aliens come to earth to take over the planet and it is up to a group of monsters who have been locked up in the top secret military base Area 51 to take them on. The film is full of great one-liners and colourful characters, least of which being the monsters themselves. Both B.O.B. and Insectosaurus stand out as being the funniest, the former with his lack of brain and subsequent comedic banter and the latter for his sheer size masking a cute benign personality.

There are a lot of human characters in this story, led by Susan (aka Ginormica) who becomes a super-strong giant after a radioactive meteorite lands on top of her on her wedding day. The US President is particularly funny, especially when he starts playing the Beverley Hills Cop theme (or for the new generation, the Crazy Frog tune) as a means of communication with the aliens in a nice rip-off of “Close Encounters Of The Third Kind”. Where this film differentiates itself from others of its type is its execution in digital 3D which is nothing short of astounding. The pictures and effects are so clear, colourful and vibrant that you feel like you are in the movie itself and unlike IMAX, it is not overwhelming. The future of 3D is really in this type of film and hopefully this trend will continue in to the future. “Monsters Vs Aliens” is a good, fun film with some stunning visuals and colourful characters making for an enjoyable experience.

THE BAD: It may be harsh to say this film does not quite reach the heights of its genre, but with so many great CG-animated films made, this description cannot be avoided. “Monsters Vs Aliens” is good, but it does not match the quality of films like “Finding Nemo” or “Wall-E” from Pixar. The reason for this is largely due to a lack of punch and lethargy in the story telling. Despite being a short ninety minutes, the first twenty or so go by a little too slowly without much to grab your interest; most of this is spent setting up Susan’s character and while it is important to the way the rest of the film plays out, it is also a little boring. Also, given the comedic nature of the main monster characters, it is a shame that more was not done to exploit this, leaving parts of the film a bit flat in execution. As a result of these factors, the film lacks a knockout punch that would have made it memorable which is a shame because the core concept is fantastic and its rendering in 3D is marvellous.

At only 21-years-of-age, Jazmine Sullivan has a maturity in her voice far beyond her years. Her debut album Fearless was introduced to the US public last year and is already successful, reaching number 1 on the R&B charts and number 6 overall. It only takes one listen to realise why. It has that new album smell about it, when the artist is untainted, innovative and bringing something original to the table.

Sullivan’s style is soulful and eclectic, and she seems to be influenced by many of the great female artists of the last decade. Need U Bad, her first single, has a definite Lauryn Hill sound to it. My Foolish Heart leans towards an Alicia Keys vibe. Bust Your Windows even brings a bit of an Amy Winehouse flavour, minus the feral, alcoholic mess.

Sullivan is the executive producer on Fearless as well as the sole songwriter. She is Missy Elliot’s protégé, and Missy puts in her two cents on Dream Big. Though the main topic focused on is heartbreak, as it is in almost all R&B/soul albums, the songs don’t blur into one big crying mess. They all have their own story, and Sullivan tells them in real and diverse ways. It’s unlikely you’ll need your skip button for a single track.

She branches out from the tear-jerkers with songs like Dream Big, and the fun, old-school sounding Switch. In fact a lot of the album sounds like it could have been from a past era, much like Amy Winehouse’s style. Songs like Switch and Lions, Tigers & Bears, two of the stand outs, have such a soulful essence to them that you can imagine they’re playing from a juke box or an old record player. In Love With Another Man is remarkable from the first lyric and reminds us of how soul should sound, in case we’d forgotten.

At first listen Jazmine Sullivan might be described as raw and unbridled, however pay a little more attention and you will find that there’s a sense of control about her that is womanly and powerful. She is intense but true to herself, and with a debut album already Grammy nominated, Sullivan has every right to be fearless.

A X-Men and Heroes cocktail that lasts for an hour and a half and 21 minutes and speaks about a group of people with psychic powers and The Division on trail. The latter is a clandestine US agency that hunts down paranormals for engineering a super-powered army.

That has brought in apparently everything that everybody wants including usual genre thrills, fresh twists and a lightning-fast pace. There’s also present an increasingly economic use of exposition that keeps you on the qui vive. Despite the gaping holes in the plot that do not reveal initially, you’ll like it, for you understand it’s difficult keeping up with all the intricacies in the narrative.

But Push also has its moments. Beyond the characters blessed or cursed with extrasensory abilities, Push rewards the patience with some highly bona fide and inventive plotting that weaves around Nick (a Mover or possessor of telekinetic powers), his father’s murderers The Division and his self-exiled life in Hong Kong (now a gritty melting pot of dusty tenements, ramshackle markets and incomplete skyscrapers) where Cassie (a Watcher i.e. clairvoyant) brings up Nick’s trouble and leads him towards his destiny. But now comes the difference: Nick, the protagonist is not a messiah in spite of all his powers. He knows using them but not very proficiently. That makes him solve problems by moving objects rather than by devising perplexing, diabolic acts or plans.

An unconventional cerebral approach definitely deserves a credit and it goes to this seemingly action sci-fi. It does Push the genre boundary, but paranormal parameters must confine only the gaming world.

Overall a teen stuff that’s fun to watch despite director Paul McGuigan’s bedeviling flashback usages.

BOTTOM LINE: This classic rags-to-riches tale accomplishes the feat of not only telling a great story of triumph over adversity but manages to open your eyes to a part of the world that is hardly ever covered in a Hollywood film besides clichés; no wonder the Academy gave it the Best Picture Oscar.

THE GOOD: “Slumdog Millionaire” works on many levels, least of which being the theme of destiny. Juxtaposing a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for lead character Jamal (Dev Patel) to play the game show ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire’ with his tumultuous life story of where he grew up in the slums of Mumbai India is a rich and powerful tale of triumph over adversity. Jamal only wants to be with his true love Latika (Freida Pinto). To find her, he manages to get himself on to the game show for the sole purpose that she will see him and contact him. As fate would have it, Jamal knows the answers to all the questions through the random events that have occurred to him. Jamal does not know who is on the one thousand rupee note but he does know who is on the US hundred dollar bill because a blind boy who was made blind in order to become a beggar tells Jamal who it is, a fate Jamal barely escaped himself. Game show host Prem Kumar (Anil Kapoor) calls in the police on suspicions that Jamal is cheating (after all, how can a slumdog know anything). As the police question him, Jamal tells his life story and in so doing, gives detailed accounts of specific incidents which directly relate to how he knew the answer to each and every question he was asked on the show. This story is harrowing, particularly in the telling of Jamal’s life as a child. For example, he knows what the God Rama is holding in his hand because when anti-Muslim violence breaks out in his slum and his mother is violently killed, he sees a child dressed as Rama as he escapes. Watching all these incidents unfold through dramatic flashbacks and cross-cutting, we learn that Jamal’s destiny was to succeed in winning the game show, thereby allowing him to rise up out of the slums and live the dream of riches, with the entire country watching on in awe. The film is inspiring, sometimes brutal and ultimately moving without ever becoming corny or sentimental, even when Jamal realises his destiny and gets the girl. Director Danny Boyle takes a classically archetypal storyline and transposes it in to a culture that is barely covered outside of stereotypes in Hollywood, crafting a brilliant piece of cinema that not only plays to the rags-to-riches story it tells but opens your eyes to another culture and world that many in Western nations may not necessarily have any understanding of. “Slumdog Millionaire” is perhaps deservedly the winner of the Best Picture Oscar, simply for working in metaphors, showing a different side of the world, and doing it on a very modest budget while delivering some powerful visuals and storytelling.

THE BAD: The world ‘slumdog’ is in the title for a reason; if you do not have an affinity for watching films set in desolate and third world conditions then this film is definitely not for you. The only other issue with the film is that the musical soundtrack at times feels like its belting you over the head with an incessant heavy drum beat and heavy overtones that are inspired by Indian music. What we are watching is dramatic enough; to have that music blast its way through the experience is almost too much, particularly in the harsher scenes.

This is where the young Turks take it away from the pretenders. Bole to.. Subash Ghai, Yash Chopra and the likes of them. Let the young ones soar now. And, Ladies & Gentlemen, I am so glad to report that my fantasies are finally coming true. The new order IS taking over. Original ideas are being shaped with skill and imagination. After more than half a lifetime of being fed escapist rubbish by the so called dream merchants and showmen I am finally enjoying good cinema unleashed by a string of young movie makers. Delhi 6 is a worthy successor to Rang De Basanti and Rakeysh Om Parkash Mehra emphatically proves that he is not a one trick pony.

Abhishek Bachchan is the American born desi who volunteers to accompany his grandmother, Waheeda Rehman (I love her so) back to her roots all the way from New York to the by lanes of Chandni Chowk which is Delhi 6 for the uninformed and those lost in the cyber world who have forgotten the postal addresses used in the romantic days of letter writing. This in itself was enough to make me go all nostalgic about the days when I would wait and wait for my Chammak Challo’s letters. On his first trip to India the grandson discovers the world of myriad hues that constitutes the Indian society. There are so many characters in the movie and each one of them so distinctive. Yet the amalgamation of their role in the story is so effortless which is a tribute not only to their acting skills but also to the screenplay and of course the directorial genius.

Abhishek’s intended journey as a chaperone quickly changes into a discovery of that mystic fabric which binds people of different religions and social standards, a realization of the weaknesses and prejudices which breaks the façade of harmony only to rewind into normalcy again. It’s this mad medley of love, hate, rigidity and tolerance which makes Indians what they are and Mehra has eminently succeeded in condensing that macro picture into one neighborhood of Chandni Chowk. There are way too many good characterizations to find individual appreciation here but I have to single out Deepak Dobriyal for his brilliant portrayal of the Muslim Jalebiwallah who becomes the target of the ire of religious bigots and of course Vijay Raaz as the classical Delhi cop. His Haryanvi accented dialogue delivery is a delight to watch. Cyrus Sahukar as the photographer who is cuckolding Prem Chopra, the rich money lender, plays a charming cameo.

Abhishek, as the bewildered westerner, has suitably underplayed his character. Sonam Kapoor is naturally vivacious and can only get better. Rishi Kapoor is looking more and more like his great father. Atul Kulkarni has put on some weight but still comes good as the slow witted butt of all jokes.

There are numerous scenes which have been beautifully composed but the surprising one was the Ram Leela. It took me back forty years when as a young lad I had seen the old Delhi Ram Leela for the first and only time. The images are still fresh in my mind and lo behold I was reliving the experience all over again. Raghbir Yadav has lent his voice to the musical rendition of the timeless epic. All the classical touches of theatre artistry are there to see especially the scene of the flying Vanars and of Ravan encountering the Lakshman Rekha. Mehra also cocks a snook at self serving politicians with their mandir-masjid politics and the plethora of news channels which find merit in repeating ad nauseam the most ridiculous of news. The photography reveals the love for the old city. Panoramic shots of the Jama Masjid, Red Fort and the skyline of old Delhi is simply breathtaking.

A R Rehman’s compositions are great. The beautifully sung “Masakali” by Mohit Chauhan brings alive the spontaneity of Sonam’s character. Kailash Kher & Javed Ali have put their heart into the soul stirring “Arzian”. A spiritual song is in every movie is almost becoming a norm with Rehman which is not a bad thing at all. But my favourite is the title song by Blaaze,Benny Dayal,Vivinenne, Tanvi & Claire. After all “Yeh Dilli hai mere yaar”. Go, watch & feel alive.

Movie Mama Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
Recommended For: Middle school age and above

Starring: Kevin James, Jayma Mays, Keir O’Donnell, Shirley Knight, Stephen Rannazzisi
Directed By: Steve Carr
Running Time: 1 hr. 31 min.
MPAA Rating: PG for some violence, mild crude and suggestive humor, and language.
Genre: Comedy/Family/Crime

As a suburban single dad, Paul Blart’s (Kevin James) dream is to become a New Jersey cop. He certainly has the ability despite being overweight, but each time, hypoglycemia prevents him from passing the test. So a mall security guard he must remain, taking his job as seriously as if he were protecting the president of the United States. But when a group of criminals posing as mall employees take over the mall, Blart proves to everyone what a great cop he truly is.

Paul Blart: Mall Cop is a far cry from an award-winning film, but a comedy the whole family can see together is a winner, no matter what. You won’t come out of the theater with a moral lesson learned, but you won’t have to cover your child’s eyes or ears either. This is enough for me to give this 2-star film an extra star. Yes, it’s slow in spots, it’s slapstick and silly, and most of the actors are less than sub-par, but if you’re willing to suspend reality for 90 minutes, and you’ve got a third grade sense of humor to tap into, it’s also truly entertaining, funny and heartwarming.

PROS
In everyday life, Paul Blart doesn’t take many risks. But when push comes to shove, he reaches inside himself and finds the courage to save those he cares about. There are some sublte themes about emotional overeating, the importance of family, and being in control of yourself.

I loved the retro rock soundtrack, which casts an audio spell over the film that suspends Paul in time. He doesn’t own a cell phone, doesn’t have a twitter account or four-wheeled transportation, and he learns pop culture from tweens at the mall while riding on his Segway. Paul may be the only person who takes himself seriously, but therein lies the true message of the film: to succeed in any venture, you must believe in yourself first.

CONS
Be warned that there is a lot of “fat” in this film. You glimpse a chubby lady’s back and tummy rolls (including her bra), fat jokes abound, and fat people shove food into their mouths for comfort or contest. Paul, who usually doesn’t drink, gets raving drunk at one point, which is both funny and uncomfortable. There is mild comic violence, a few minor curse words and crude jokes, but they aren’t too easily noticed. Paul runs over a dog on his Segway, though it isn’t shown.

OVERALL
For a PG-rated comedy, Paul Blart: Mall Cop delivers the laughs.
