Twitter – How to Get Started

Many people have heard about Twitter: the incredible potential it carries, how easy it is to follow people, how nice if you have hundreds of followers. But what is Twitter actually? Let’s see what they say about themselves: “Twitter is a service for friends, family, and co-workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing?”

That’s a nice definition, but Twitter is much more. As an internet marketer you can use Twitter to market your product or opportunity, get to know new people, exchange ideas, and check out what other internet marketer offer.

It’s easy to get started. Just go to the Twitter homepage, click on the big green “Get Started-Join!” button, fill in the form and create your account. Once you created your account, you can login and see a page very similar to a blog. In the upper left corner you can read the question: What are you doing? Underneath you find an empty field, where you can type in your answer to this question. The unique thing with Twitter is, that your messages – or tweets how Twitter calls them – are restricted to 140 characters; you can’t tweet longer messages.

Before you get started, you might want to upload your picture and write something about yourself in your bio. Look at the options on the upper right corner. Click on “Settings”, fill out the form, upload your picture if you like and if you get lost somewhere, just click on “home” and you are back where you started.

If you just set up your Twitter account, you might not have any followers yet. It doesn’t make sense to tweet a tweet if nobody reads it, so you want to follow some people, who usually follow you back and grow the number of your Twitter followers. If you want to use Twitter for private contacts, click on “Find people” and type in the names of your friends and colleges and if they are on Twitter, they will show up. Click on the right button where it says “Follow” and you are following them. Following someone means you can read his tweets and your tweets show up in the other persons time-line.

If you want to use Twitter to grow your online business, you can also start with the “finding people” option, but you might want to look for your target market. If you are in MLM, type in “MLM” and look at the list showing up. Right besides the picture the Twitter name is displayed in blue; if you click on it, you can see the profile of the person and can decide if you want to follow him or her.

When using Twitter, it’s important to keep in mind that you are contacting real people (most of the time). Be polite, don’t use offensive language, treat others with respect, don’t spam them, and you’ll have a great time exchanging ideas, finding new friends and customers, by answering the simple question: What are you doing?
