Twitter Trends – #FollowFriday

Those of you who know me from twitter probably know I am a fan of using hashmarks to mark trends in twitter, #twittertrends.  There are a lot of trends you will see repeatedly over the the week and frankly some of them probably need some explanation to the twitter noobs. The first big trend most people notice on Twitter is #FollowFriday  this is a great way to quickly attract followers. Despite what some people over at Twitip think actively seeking followers isn’t a bad thing.

The first rule of #FollowFriday is it is meant for use of friday.  Sending out #FollowFriday posts with a list of people who people should follow on any other day of the week is a sure way to get you unfollowed.  Mentioning #FollowFriday in normal conversation throughout the rest of the weeks isn’t really a bad thing and often times will gain you followers and get you mentioned on other people’s #FollowFriday tweets.

The second rule of #FollowFriday is only recommend people worth following.  If you recommend a bunch of people spamming me with MagPie or or only tweet crap about their own blog not only will I not follow them, I won’t follow you much longer and probably promote you on #UnfollowSaturday. If you aren’t following the person or group don’t recommend them.

My third rule of #FollowFriday is you need to talk to me at sometime during the week. I seldom follow anyone very long who doesn’t talk to me.  If you provide useful information and don’t engage in very much conversation, I might follow you and will probably give you a #FollowFriday shout because you are useful.  If you are an average Joe or Jane Twitterhead you need to make  I know you are there  if you want me to follow you in return.  Replying to one of my twits or retweeting one of my posts is a good way to get noticed.

In the end #FollowFriday is a great way to get noticed on Twitter and by extension everywhere else you go on the web.  Most importantly though  use it because you believe the people you are promoting are interesting and worthy of being followed and you will be rewarded many times over.

  1. With so many social media sites out there do you think they will replace the search engine for marketing online or for folks to find what they are looking for?
